Vintage spray paint project: Cap Matches Color

Cap Matches Color (CMC) is a joint project between Meal (UK) & Slyle (USA), UTS.

The primary goal of CMC is to document individual writers’ history and knowledge of vintage spray paint, as well as preserve spray paint cans (originally intended to be discarded after use), through well researched “digs,” pictures, and collections. CMC is committed to making this information available to the masses via the Internet, and eventually through a wide-scale publication.

Since the start of the project, CMC has received support from many pioneers in the graffiti world, including: Bates AIO, Bio TATS, Giant, Risky WCA, Skore TRC, Web TC5, and Zebster to name a few, as well as exclusive pictures made available by Martha Cooper.

Think back to the days before specialized paint brands dominated the market. Graffiti consisted of trial and error, experimenting with much treasured racked caps from household cleaners, mixing colors through a variety of techniques, and racking missions from smaller independent stores–practices, all of which, for the most part, have been lost. This knowledge is our quest: Preserving spray paint history so that the next generation has access for reference and historical purposes.
