Miami area artists paint huge mural in Baton Rouge, Louisiana

Eduardo Mendieta and two other recognized South Florida urban artists recently completed a spray paint mural in Downtown Baton Rouge. The mural covers the entire 6,000-square-foot front wall of an urban science, technology, and arts high school called the Mentorship Academy. The mural is titled "On the Shoulders of Giants" and illustrates the importance of science and art education to inspire students.

The artists, Mendieta, Jay Bellichi, and Paul Hughes, do great spray paint work in the Miami area and came to Baton Rouge to work with the Walls Project  a nonprofit group that organizes murals in public spaces to beautify Baton Rouge. This mural is the largest street-style mural in the area and contributes to the ever growing public art scene in the city.

The mural was sponsored by Solutions Through Science, a partnership of vinyl and chlorine producers in Louisiana, to support science education and students. "On the Shoulders of Giants" is a remarkable mural that celebrates urban art and culture.

Eddie Mendieta: He has worked in West Palm Beach, FL for 20 years and has been interested in graffiti and fine arts since an early age in Union City, NJ. Eddie works mostly in urban art and has completed murals nationwide. Eddie has completed murals for XLVI Superbowl Indianapolis project as a featured artist, murals for Art Basel Week in Miami.

Jay Bellichi:  A Boston native who moved to Miami in 2000, Jay focuses on abstract art on canvases, walls, and fine art pieces. Jay tagged under the name “Remote” He founded “GRAFF TOYZ,” a company that produces graffiti inspired décor pieces and art objects and co-founded ALT SPACE, an artist-operated gallery in Coconut Grove

Paul Hughes: Lives in Boca Raton, FL. His primary focus is painting walls in South Florida and he has also been featured in Art Basel Week in Miami.

Opening October 17, 2013, the Coral Gables Museum will present Concrete Paradise: Miami Marine Stadium, an original exhibition devoted to Miami Marine Stadium’s flashy past, its edgy present, and its spectacular proposed comeback as a world-class sports and performance venue. Curated by renowned author and architectural conservator, Rosa Lowinger, this interactive exhibit will bring the glory days of Miami’s most daringly modern structure back to life through stunning video footage, rare photos and keepsakes, original art installations, photo murals of the stadium’s infamous graffiti, and an antique hydroplane.

The exhibit will feature images of the extraordinary graffiti that constantly evolves on the walls of the stadium and works by contemporary artists who have been inspired by the building itself. These latter works-- which include sculpture, painting, video and photography-- demonstrate the profound influence the stadium and its environs have had on visual artists at a national level.

Throughout its run at the museum, a full schedule of special events, tours, and lectures will be offered to the general public, allowing visitors to learn more about one of Miami’s most fascinating historic landmarks.

Public Opening Event at the Wynwood Walls, The Pop-Up Shop and release of The Wynwood Walls and Doors book.

For Art Basel Miami 2011, Goldman Properties will host the first Wynwood Walls Pop-Up Shop and gallery space showcasing exclusive artworks by the celebrated artists who contributed to the mural project. In addition to the works for sale in the group exhibition, the new The Wynwood Walls and Doors book featuring insider texts by Tony Goldman, Jeffrey Deitch, and photographs by Martha Cooper will make its debut at the shop, providing viewers with an indispensable guide to the murals in the area.

Among other collectable and gift items available only at The Wynwood Walls shop during Art Basel are a series of limited edition t-shirts designed by contributing artists, and a series of photo books showing the infamous Houston Street and Bowery murals in New York City created by Keith Haring, Os Gemeos, Shepard Fairey, and Kenny Scharf.

The first Post-graffism show by the Surface Merchants collective; deriving inspiration fromthe discontent originating from the current economics of life in modern day America. The Surface Merchants collective is comprised of Miami artists Raymond Adrian, Alex Yanes, and Daniel Fila.

All works showcased in “Lost and Found” will be collaborative pieces from all three artists, blending their individual distinctive styles to create a unique experience for the viewer.

On Friday April 8th at 8:00 pm, the show will debut accompanied by a short film presentation showing the Surface Merchants creative process. The show will run from Friday April 8th 2011 to May 1st 2011, the venue will not be open on Sundays.

Concurrent with Art Basel | Miami Beach 2010, The Arts Fund and W South Beach are pleased to present Never Say Never and The 6on12 Art Crawl at the W South Beach Hotel, curated by Justin Giarla of White Walls Gallery in San Francisco. These two events will be the 2010 Miami convergence of artists working within varying facets of the Urban Contemporary genre including street art, graffiti and lowbrow. Exhibiting artists will include, Blek le Rat, Clayton Brothers, Eddie Colla Kevin Cyr, D Young V, EINE, Rene Gagnon, Sergio Garcia, Greg Gossel, Casey Gray, Jessica Hess, HUSH, Kofie One, LEBO, Pedro Matos, Aaron Nagel, Ferris Plock, and Dan Witz.


Never Say Never will be held at The W Hotel LAWN on Friday, December 3 through Sunday, December 5 and will be on view from 10 am-8pm on Friday and Saturday and 10 am-5pm on Sunday. The exhibition is free and open to the public.

Four of the exhibiting artists in Never Say Never—Kofie One, Casey Gray, HUSH and Eddie Colla, will be showing their work at the W South Beach hotel’s 6on12 Art Crawl where the hotel will open six of its residences on the 12th floor to exhibit art works from some of today’s most exciting contemporary artists. The artist salons will be open to the public on November 30 – December 5 from 12-8pm, with a cocktail hour each evening from 6-8 pm.

Highlights of the Never Say Never event will include award-winning filmmaker Adam Hootnick of Resonance Interactive an ARTS FUND company. Hootnick will be on-site filming the artist salons in the W South Beach Residences. On Saturday December 4, The ARTS FUND will feature LEBO painting live with Danny Teneglia and Behrouz at the WALL Lounge - W South Beach.
