Canada, Montreal: Aug. 9 & 10 - Under Pressure 2014

Under Pressure 2014
Official: https://m.facebook.com/events/898088090217144

Under Pressure is the largest and longest running event of its kind all across North America. Under Pressure is a graffiti festival which focuses on community development, artist empowerment as well as positive youth development through ownership and responsibility of a shared space. Currently heading into its nineteenth year this festival is the longest running graffiti and hip hop festival in existence. The main reason it has been able to be sustained for so long is because it is an event done by the community for the community, everyone who works on keeping it alive does so on a volunteer basis.

The festival takes place over two days, during the first full-week weekend in August. Throughout the two days stages are given over to performers from across the country to keep the crowd lively and the bboy and bgirl battle which always goes down on Sunday afternoon. There is a kid’s area for the little ones to get creative and a skate ramp set up over the course of the two days for open jams and a competition as well.

Susan says: Please tell everyone. This is a world-class event.

Canada, Toronto: April 2, 2013: Hidden Toronto book launch

Hidden Toronto - by Kathy Toth
A photo book exploring graffiti in the hidden corners of Toronto

(Toronto) Hidden Toronto by Kathy Toth is a new photobook launching April 2 (5-8pm) at Swipe Design @ 401 Richmond. Graffiti in Toronto and how Rob Ford has driven artists to legitimacy and pushed then underground as well.

Graffiti once considered a truly underground art form developed in Toronto a little later then other US and European cities under liberal circumstances and benefited from the many legal spaces where artists could paint free of harassment. This has remained constant for almost twenty years, however with the election of Rob Ford and his limited understanding of the art form and extremely conservative 'buffing' policy, artists have taken their work in droves to hidden spots which now get painted more often. This includes less trafficked areas such as drainage channels, bridges, overpasses and abandoned buildings which are featured in 'Hidden Toronto'.

Many of these spaces are only seen by the artists and urban explorers and require a fair bit of trekking and specific instructions (or luck) to find, making them more special then coming across work in Rush Lane. While graffiti is an ephemeral art form, political policies as well as developments have changed our city on many levels and even the underground elements reflect this.

Gentrification aside, some elements of the city still remain hidden just below the surface and new work and spaces are out there to be discovered and this book features imagery from these locations which not only document the artwork and spaces themselves, but also the mood.

Kathy Toth is a local commercial photographer and visual artist whose documentary projects focus on elements of the urban, industrial and built environment. She has documented graffiti in Toronto for almost 20 years and this is her first solo photo book project. She has exhibited her paintings and photography extensively and is currently working on related projects.

Canada, Montreal: Sept 1-15, 2010: Will Rise - The Seventh Letter Crew

WILL RISE
On Wednesday Sept 1st 2010, Yves Laroche Galerie d'art will be presenting The Seventh Letter Crew’s first Canadian group exhibition entitled Will Rise, held in conjunction with Norm AWR & Basta!

Eponymously named after the 7th letter in the alphabet, these 'Gods of Graffiti’ represent one of the world’s most inspired, racially diverse and prolific graffiti crew ever assembled. Yves Laroche Galerie d'art will be showing new and exclusive works by six of the most influential members of the collective: REVOK, PUSH, NORM, POSE, REYES, and RETNA.

NORM.AWR & BASTA! GUEST CURATORS. COMMISSAIRE INVITÉ.

What you are invited to experience here is some of the world's finest and most reputable graffiti inspired art', says Louis Coupal, the shows’ co-curator and founder of creative agency Basta!. After attending a Seventh letter exhibition in 2005, Coupal developed a strong interest in the collective’s mandate. This spark is what has led the world renowned collective to ignite their first Montreal-based group exhibition.

All are invited to the opening, scheduled for Wednesday, September 1sth 2010 from 6-9 pm at Yves Laroche Galerie d'art. Music provided by DJ Sagewondah (French Connection) & special guests. Artists will be present.
