"Somos Luz" ("We are Light") is the message painted on 50 houses at the building Begonia I in the neighborhood of El Chorrillo (Panama City). It was made by Spanish artist collective Boa Mistura with the neighbors' help.
Boa Mistura was inspired by the neighborhood identity. The starting point is the color grid spontaneously generated by every neighbor when they paint only the part of the building that they understand as their house. The new typography layer modifies this grid losing the housing unit in favor of the community concept.
The message aims to inspire daily. Not only the neighbors, but other people that walk by the building every day, reminding them that every person is invaluable, regardless of where they really live.
The scale of the work (more than 2000 square meters) allows it to be inhabited, changing at every moment with the interaction. It is not just the façade, corridors and stairways were also painted and converted into abstract color compositions that are the new environment for daily scenes like clothes hanging or people on the balcony.
The project was sponsored by the Bienal del Sur in Panama, and is part of the CROSSROADS series, in which Boa Mistura is using participative urban art as a tool for encourage in rundown communities, working with the local residents in the improvement of their own space.

Somos Luz es el mensaje con el que el colectivo de artistas españoles Boa Mistura, ayudados por los propios vecinos, han intervenido las 50 viviendas del edificio Begonia I en el barrio de El Chorrillo (Panamá ciudad).
Inspirados en la identidad del barrio, Boa Mistura toma como punto de partida la retícula de colores que se genera de forma espontánea al pintar cada vecino la porción del edificio que entiende como suya. Modificando esta retícula al introducir la tipografía se pierde la unidad de vivienda para ganar en concepto de comunidad.
El mensaje busca inspirar diariamente no sólo a los vecinos sino también al resto de personas que pasen cerca del edificio y recordarles que cada persona tiene un valor incalculable, independientemente de la realidad del lugar en el que vivan.
La escala de la obra (más de 2000m2 pintados) permite que sea habitada, cambiando a cada instante por la interacción con ella. No se trata sólo de la fachada, los corredores y núcleos de escaleras han sido también intervenidos, convertidos así en abstractas composiciones de color que cobran vida con la ropa tendida o cuando alguien se asoma al balcón.
El proyecto, impulsado por la Bienal del Sur en Panamá, forma parte de la serie CROSSROADS, con la que Boa Mistura está utilizando el Arte Urbano participativo como herramienta dinamizadora en comunidades carentes, implicando a los vecinos en la mejora de su propio espacio vital.

Tonyʼs Gallery is delighted to present “Smiling Since 1999″ – the first UK solo exhibition by the legendary Spanish street artist PEZ.
PEZ first started painting his iconic ‘smiling fishʼ logo in the streets of Barcelona in 1999 and has since established a worldwide reputation with exhibitions in Europe, America and Asia. Now PEZ is bringing his happy and fun style to London for his exhibition at Tony’s which will celebrate his work and bring some colour and cheer to the streets of the capital.
PEZ currently lives and works in Bogota (Colombia) and will draw inspiration from his country of residence to develop his solo show at Tony’s by creating a Colombian beach bar installation within the gallery space.
The exhibition will feature an in-situ mural presenting PEZ’s recognisable fish jumping in from the street walls outside onto the canvases within the gallery, alongside a direct intervention onto the gallery walls and a selection of new works including canvases and limited edition screen prints.
Visitors to the gallery will be able to experience positive vibes from PEZ’s smiling fish artworks and enjoy the chilled out atmosphere of the PEZ BAR.
Look out for PEZ’s fish as they will be popping up in all kinds of unlikely places around Shoreditch over the next month.

Celebrated British aerosol artist, Xenz, announces a 'pop up' show in Ibiza at La Hora Azul gallery in August 2010
One of the UK’s most respected spray can artists, Xenz, lands in Ibiza this August 21 to create an exhibition of new artworks inspired by the Balearic Islands' ethereal essence. Known as the 'Monet of graffiti' – so-called because he channels his love of nature through this traditionally urban art form – Xenz is a major figure to emerge from the infamous Bristol street art scene.
Earlier this year, the artist visited Ibiza in search of inspiration and the result is a series of paintings featuring the island's native birds, butterflies, vines, and flowers presented as a mosaic-style masterpiece comprising hundreds of small canvas tiles, which collectively form a mural.
Xenz explains: "My aim is to develop a community around these mosaics, where people who come to the show are the only ones to ever see it in its complete state – a bit like seeing graffiti before it’s buffed or destroyed. Each participant becomes part-owner of the mural – almost like buying shares."
To complement the show, which the artist describes as a "fantasy greenhouse," Xenz will be painting onto the exterior building of La Galeria Elefante – one of the oldest fincas [country houses] in Ibiza. Using the island’s springtime flora and fauna as inspiration, Xenz, who has painted walls – and even church ceilings – across the globe since the early ‘90s, will be working his art into the existing natural landscape in the trompe-l’oeil style giving visitors to the show the chance to see the artwork growing over the facade of this beautiful building.
The artist says: "I see my artwork like an organism; like ivy or an orchid that mutates and grows in unusual places. This is the graffiti in it; the wild, unstoppable, destructive element, but it is also beautiful. I like to make things look like they've always been there.”
Xenz has been shown in exhibitions and art fairs in the UK, Miami, New York, Basel and Sydney. He has had sell-out London solo shows, and his limited edition prints are in huge demand. He was part of the prestigious Tunnel 228 (a collaboration between the Old Vic and one of the UK’s most innovative performance companies, Punchdrunk) alongside Antony Micallef, Polly Morgan and Paul Fryer. His work is in private and corporate collections worldwide. He studied at Edinburgh College of Art.
XENZ painted his first piece in 1987 at the age of 14. He grew up in the north of England, which gave a lot of space to experiment with graffiti styles due to its isolation from mainstream popular culture. In 1993, he formed what has become one of the UK’s longest standing and most respected graffiti crews known as the TCF crew. Xenz has developed a unique approach to the art form, and the word graffiti no longer sufficiently describes his work. His extraordinary cohesion between mind, memory and spray can, allows this influential artist to walk up to a wall or canvas and paint an epic landscape from his imagination. His murals are fantasy dreamscapes and he is known for painting dramatic skyscapes and floating cities in a destructed architectural style. He successfully marries fine art with gritty urban art forms, using the spray can to capture fragments of memory and ever-changing subject matter, often drawn from the natural world. www.xenz.org

Dreiunddreißig Mitglieder aus der Creme de la Creme der Graffiti Kultur zählt das spannende Projekt inzwischen. Die Künstler treten miteinander in Dialog und erarbeiten Skizzen für jeweils ein anderes Mitglied und stellen dieses so vor die Herausforderung über den Schatten seiner eigenen Style Buchstaben zu springen. Eine Auswahl der phantastischen Ergebnisse dieses Experiments ist nun pünktlich zum Buchrelease des On The Run Book #8 erstmals in einer Kollektivausstellung in Berlin zu bewundern.
