iPad app: 2Many2Name by KEL1ST - Graffiti Wild Style History

When I first made Art Crimes, in 1994, KEL1ST (pronounced "Kel First") and his brother, MARE139, already had a slick, beautiful website, called VoiceOfTheGhetto.com (now long gone). Since then, they've both been off doing great interactive projects, paintings, sculptures, blogs, you name it.

This new interactive book from KEL1ST is an effort from the heart (and from his personal photo collection). For history. For you. The good stuff.

2Many2Name
(The app's website —— Tip: You might want to view this multimedia website on a computer or iPad.)

iOS 6 and above
app made for iPad viewing

On wild style, train history, New York City —— from someone who was there.
Randy "KEL1ST" Rodriguez presents "2Many2Name," the first in-depth view of Graffiti Wild Style. 2Many2Name is a historical review of the use of the number 2 by different Grand Masters of Graffiti. KEL1ST's narrative takes you on a ride.

80 photos of NYC in the 1970s and 1980s

These are scenic photos of New York City back in the day. Some of them have graffiti in them. Most of the photos are amazing because they show us a New York, and a world, that doesn't exist anymore.

Canada, Toronto: April 2, 2013: Hidden Toronto book launch

Hidden Toronto - by Kathy Toth
A photo book exploring graffiti in the hidden corners of Toronto

(Toronto) Hidden Toronto by Kathy Toth is a new photobook launching April 2 (5-8pm) at Swipe Design @ 401 Richmond. Graffiti in Toronto and how Rob Ford has driven artists to legitimacy and pushed then underground as well.

Graffiti once considered a truly underground art form developed in Toronto a little later then other US and European cities under liberal circumstances and benefited from the many legal spaces where artists could paint free of harassment. This has remained constant for almost twenty years, however with the election of Rob Ford and his limited understanding of the art form and extremely conservative 'buffing' policy, artists have taken their work in droves to hidden spots which now get painted more often. This includes less trafficked areas such as drainage channels, bridges, overpasses and abandoned buildings which are featured in 'Hidden Toronto'.

Many of these spaces are only seen by the artists and urban explorers and require a fair bit of trekking and specific instructions (or luck) to find, making them more special then coming across work in Rush Lane. While graffiti is an ephemeral art form, political policies as well as developments have changed our city on many levels and even the underground elements reflect this.

Gentrification aside, some elements of the city still remain hidden just below the surface and new work and spaces are out there to be discovered and this book features imagery from these locations which not only document the artwork and spaces themselves, but also the mood.

Kathy Toth is a local commercial photographer and visual artist whose documentary projects focus on elements of the urban, industrial and built environment. She has documented graffiti in Toronto for almost 20 years and this is her first solo photo book project. She has exhibited her paintings and photography extensively and is currently working on related projects.

NYC: Nov 9-24, 2012: Photographers Eriberto and Estevan Oriol [date changed to 9th]

Carmichael Gallery is pleased to announce
Like Father, Like Son : NYC

a retrospective survey of works by renowned Los Angeles-based Chicano father and son photographers, Eriberto and Estevan Oriol. The exhibition debuted at Carmichael Gallery's Culver City space in the fall of 2011.

The New York edition of Like Father, Like Son : NYC will comprise fifteen limited edition black and white, color, silver gelatin and digital c-prints from each photographer, including works exhibited in Art in the Streets (April 17 - August 11, 2011) at The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA). The exhibition, which offers a dramatic taste of the urban California lifestyle, marks the first showing of the Oriols' work side by side on the US east coast.

There will be an opening reception for Like Father, Like Son : NYC on November 9 (new date), from 6 to 8pm at 303 Tenth Ave in Chelsea. Both Eriberto and Estevan Oriol will be in attendance. The exhibition will run through November 24, 2012.

Estevan Oriol

From hip-hop club bouncer to tour manager for Cypress Hill and House of Pain in the late 1980s and early 1990s to the internationally celebrated professional photographer, director and urban lifestyle entrepreneur he is recognized as today, Estevan Oriol's talent, fame and success only continue to grow.

1992 saw the beginning of what quickly grew to be an influential relationship with best friend, fellow Soul Assassin associate and now world-famous tattoo artist, Mister Cartoon. Together, they created the increasingly lucrative and high-profile Joker Brand Clothing, just one of Estevan's ventures in the clothing industry, which range from Not Guilty, produced with Everlast, and his solo line Scandalous to his eponymous line with Upper Playground.

In 1995, however, Eriberto gave his son a camera, and what began as a means of capturing life on tour led to a career that has snapped up images of everyone from gang members and graffiti artists to hip hop stars and Hollywood celebrities.
