G40 Art Summit is a yearly group art show that brings together world renown artists for a month long exhibit with a different theme every year. This year’s show focuses on artwork that goes beyond the traditional two dimensional canvas. Artists are challenged to approach their work in a multi dimensional format which will expand boundaries and grow possibilities. Artwork will include layered canvases, art on found objects, free standing pieces, and many more creative approaches to the challenge at hand. The exhibit will take place at Blind Whino for the second year running. The building’s many nooks and ample spaces provide the ideal backdrop for installations that will transform the space into living art.

Above the Radar III

Original works by 25 urban artists from Los Angeles, New York, UK, Italy, and more will be on display in Washington, DC for a month-long exhibition that opens November 2, 2013 at The Fridge.

Above the Radar III is curated by Luna George, a Los Angeles based Urban Art Curator, and will bring together a hybrid of realism, street art, abstract art, graffuturism, 3-d  work, typography, illustration, collaborative artwork, surrealism, and traditional graffiti.

Above the Radar III encourages the viewer to examine intricate lines, brightly hued & vibrant colors that infuse the urban painting aesthetic.

Mark Bode

The exhibit includes:

Installation focusing on contrast and bursts of color painted by Col (New York) featuring hand-built wood pieces with abstract silhouettes of letters that work their way throughout the wall.

Original work by Mark Bode, protégé of Vaughn Bode, whose characters  continue the legacy of his father's Cheech Wizard and friends, all of which have become a quintessential part of graffiti.

3-dimensional work from Italy and Los Angeles, the collaborative painting of a maniacal character by Mice of Millions (LA) on top of an insanely intricate, hyper abstract Photo of Defer by PhotoJenInc, an explosion of color painted by Thanks One (LA), the lovely illustrative styles of UK's Inkie, explosive graffuturism by Defer and Kofie from LA, and original works by the many other exhibiting artists.

A gift shop with selected merchandise by exhibiting artists, as well as a special release of DC Graffiti snapbacks by Graffiti the City made exclusively for the DC exhibit will also be available during the exhibition.

Artists exhibiting work are: Cale, Cat Cult, Col, Dcypher, Defer, Dytch66, Eric Skotnes, Heaven, Hex, Inkie, Jesse Smith, Kofie, Kopye, Marcel "Sel" Blanco, Mark Bode, Mice of Millions, Michael Pizarro, Peeta, Pyro, Ree, Robots Will Kill, Teck, Tewsr, Thanks, and Xist.

Continuing in its tradition of coordinating gallery exhibitions with D.C.’s world-class museum shows, Contemporary Wing presents, “MUMBO SAUCE,” in conjunction with the Corcoran Gallery of Art’s Pump Me Up – D.C. Subculture of the 1980s, currently on display at the museum.

MUMBO SAUCE is a survey of artists with deep roots in Washington, D.C., and explores how such factors as Go-Go, graffiti, punk, hardcore, graphic design and fine art have shaped and influenced the work of these artists. MUMBO SAUCE is curated jointly by Roger Gastman, curator of the Corcoran’s “Pump Me Up” show, and Lauren Gentile, founder of Contemporary Wing.

Mumbo Sauce is a red, sweet, and tangy sauce, akin to barbeque or plum sauce. Indigenous to Washington, D.C., the condiment is found in carry outs throughout D.C. and the surrounding metro area. Mumbo Sauce is endemic to Washington D.C.’s African American culture, and it is the flavor of home for many D.C. natives.

Just as Mumbo Sauce conveys a rich texture and flavor that is distinctively D.C. in the cultural arena of food, the art works in the MUMBO SAUCE exhibit reflect the living, breathing soul of the city. MUMBO SAUCE explores how living and working in the District has shaped the artistic evolution of the featured artists. Participating artists include BORF, Richard Colman, Cynthia Connolly, Tim Conlon, COOL "DISCO" DAN, Clark Fox, Globe Poster Archive, Mark Jenkins, Rosina Teri Memolo, Mingering Mike and Robin Rose.

The Fridge is presenting the first solo show from Asad “ULTRA” Walker, a DC graffiti artist who has been creating work for 30 years. At quiet walks in dangerous placesULTRA will show a series of all new portraits using his signature lean, angular style. ULTRA’s portraits are inspired by the people he has seen while working in the early morning hours on the streets of DC.

“When you’re out late in DC, you see a life that most people don’t experience. You notice these crazy, beautiful things that a normal person would overlook. I want to take the images and personalities of these people I’ve met into a gallery setting. I'm painting portraits of everyday people like a bouncer who has been working for 25 years and more known DC figures like H.R. from Bad Brains. I want to show the beauty of the people I see around me,” says ULTRA.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

ULTRA’s paintings use geometric shapes painted in faint monochromatic tones that layer to form light and shadow. He started writing HOBO in DC-style go-go graffiti in 1981. In the late 80’s, he moved to NYC where he picked up ideas for new styles and approaches to his art. When he moved back to DC, he changed his name to ULTRA after Ultraman, a Japanese television series that was his favorite growing up. Over his career, ULTRA took a love for graffiti styles with seemingly simple designs, like straight letters, to develop his signature streamlined, angular style.

ULTRA has previously shown work at the Smithsonian, MOCA Gallery, Workhouse Gallery, Art Whino, Lamont Bishop Gallery, Torpedo Factory, and more.

SPECIAL EVENTS

INTRO TO GRAF WORKSHOP; October 14, 1 – 3pm: Learn how to start creating your own graffiti art from veteran artist ULTRA who has watched styles in DC and NY develop for three decades. $20 for materials and supplies.

FILM SCREENING/TALK BACK; October 21, 1 – 3pm: A screening and talk back featuring three films, including the 2008 Paris Bustillos film BORF! about internationally known, DC stencil graffiti artist John Tsombikos. BORF showedPotty-trained at Gunpoint at The Fridge in 2010.

CLOSING PARTY/ARTIST TALK; October 28, 1-3pm: An informal talk about the artist’s history, influences and style.
