NYC: March 2, 2016: Daze and Swoon at the Museum of the City of New York

Wednesday, March 2 at 6:30 pm at the Museum of the City of New York

Since graffiti emerged as a powerful form of self-expression on New York City streets in the 1970s, the city has grown into the epicenter of the contemporary street art movement. Ephemeral, often anonymous, and characterized by countless styles and techniques, street art appeals directly to passersby in often unexpected places, and on digital devices globally.

Join us for a conversation about the influence of the city in the storytelling of street artists and graffiti artists and how that influence is reflected in the work as it moves into galleries and museums.  This program is inspired by and delves into the themes of our exhibition Chris “Daze” Ellis: The City is My Muse.

Steven Harrington, Editor-in-Chief, and Jaime Rojo, Editor of Photography, founders of BrooklynStreetArt.com, which has been documenting street art around the world for nearly a decade.

DAZE, a major graffiti and street artist in New York since the late 1970s, whose work is currently on view at the Museum.

Swoon, one of the Brooklyn's most celebrated street artists, exhibits her work at museums around the world, including her 2014 exhibition, Submerged Motherlands, at the Brooklyn Museum.

CA, Los Angeles: Aug 30, 2014: Blade - King of Graffiti book signing & Freedom show opens (through Sep. 13)

BLADE

http://list.knowngallery.com/admin/temp/newsletters/7/blade-book-and-exhibit.jpg
BLADE is considered “The King of Graffiti” because by 1980, after painting 5,000 wildly creative trains, he stopped counting. Known and loved by the graffiti community, BLADE is not a myth but a crowned head visionary who has painted a rich collection of artwork on the street and on canvas.

BLADE’s first solo show in Los Angeles, this exhibit features new large-scale spray paint and paint marker artworks on canvas and NYC subway maps. Inspired by his own characters, letters, colors, and abstract imagery from some of his own subway train masterpieces from the 1970’s, the collection of artwork is a throwback to his innovative style that influenced generations of contemporary artists all over the world. Titles like “METALLIC MADNESS” and “METEROIC RAINBOW ” are reminiscent of the silver spray paint and metal trains that BLADE painted fiercely. His gifted perception for color and letter style are not just nostalgic but defining for the golden era of subway art. In “JOINT MAN ,” BLADE paints a character he originally created in 1976, at age 19, on an IRT Train. These new paintings are a look at the past fused with BLADE’s ever-future imagination of today.

BLADE: KING OF GRAFFITI is a colorful hardbound collectible book about BLADE, the prolific and legendary graffiti artist from the Bronx. BLADE’s career has spanned over forty years and writer/NY graffiti artist Chris Pape, aka FREEDOM , sits down with him to recount his high’s and low’s in this 250 page book, packed with vintage photos of his life and artwork. This book parallels the New York graffiti movement almost from its inception, moving through its glory years in the mid-1970s, when BLADE earned his title, and ending in the global art scene, where he remains a major presence. BLADE helped New York graffiti become internationally famous by making it look fun, and, for reasons of quantity, quality, and, perhaps above all, for sheer spirit, BLADE may very well be the most popular graffiti artist with his peers. This recently released book is available for sale at THE SEVENTH LETTER STORE for $39.99.

FREEDOM

FREEDOM grew up on the Upper West side of Manhattan and his name became cemented in graffiti history when he painted what became known as the Freedom Tunnel from 1980 - 1996. The tunnel underneath NYC was once FREEDOM ’s personal hall of fame, featuring many of his silver and black spray paint masterpieces, which included recreations of great artworks from history to specifically homage the importance and influence they have on graffiti art.

The city of New York and Amtrak have since buffed much of the Freedom Tunnel unfortunately but FREEDOM has found another a tunnel to paint in Rochester, upstate New York.

Inspired by his new work in that tunnel, THE ROCHESTER SERIES is a collection of 12” x 16” paintings on wooden panels, larger works on canvas, and traditional NYC wild style piece book drawings reinvented with added collage. Exploring pop objects from his youth, FREEDOM is mining vintage imagery as if he is sifting through subway grating looking for urban archaeology.

Using color in ways he never could in the 1980’s, these works are bright with exciting hues. FREEDOM paints iconic comic book heroes and classic products with graphic cartoony logos incorporating distressed backgrounds to bring into the gallery walls his musings from his current tunnel spray paint installations. In “THE THING ,” FREEDOM tags up historical NYC graffiti writers FLINT , MIKE 171, TAKI 183, and many others, again referencing the impact and gravity of his graffiti community, the writing idols of the walls.

NYC Blade signing: Fri. Aug. 8, 2014 // New books: BLADE King of Graffiti and 100 European Graffiti Artists

Book Signing for BLADE: Friday, August 8, 2014, 6:30 PM at The Museum of the City of New York

Museum event details: http://www.mcny.org/event/blade-king-graffiti

Two new books just published:

Schiffer Publishing, Ltd. is pleased to announce the release of two new graffiti art titles: Blade: King of Graffiti and 100 European Graffiti Artists:

BLADE has already told his life story through graffiti. Now, more than forty years into his career and armed with an incredible memory, BLADE sits down with Chris Pape to reflect on growing up in the Bronx in the turbulent 1970s, and recounts the highs and lows of his storied career, holding nothing back.

BLADE is considered “The King of Graffiti” because, by 1980, after painting 5,000 wildly creative trains, he stopped counting.

This dense, sprawling portfolio is the product of “modern day documenter” Steam 156′s undisputed knowledge of European graffiti, and includes artist profiles, most written by the artists themselves, crew affiliations, locations, the year they started, details about style, influences, and characteristic strokes, contours, and angles, with hundreds of photos in all.

A medium of powerful, youthful, artistic expression, graffiti spread rampantly across Europe in the early 1980s–and has never ceased. Cities across the continent are now hosts to halls of fame, abandoned spaces, and streets full of incredible work by artists, featured in this book, who are carrying the art form boldly into the future and expanding its influence even further.

When I first made Art Crimes, in 1994, KEL1ST (pronounced "Kel First") and his brother, MARE139, already had a slick, beautiful website, called VoiceOfTheGhetto.com (now long gone). Since then, they've both been off doing great interactive projects, paintings, sculptures, blogs, you name it.

This new interactive book from KEL1ST is an effort from the heart (and from his personal photo collection). For history. For you. The good stuff.

NYC: April 17, 2014: Graffiti history talk at City As Canvas exhibit

OLD’S KOOL: The Roots of New York Graffiti
Thursday, April 17 at 6:30 pm

Blazing a trail for graffiti art back in the 1970s, New York City teens claimed the city’s walls and mass transit system for their canvases—and in the process invented a new art form.

Jay J.SON Edlin, veteran graffiti artist, historian, and author of Graffiti 365 (Harry N. Abrams, 2011), discusses graffiti and street art with revolutionary but unsung writers of the ‘70s: icons COCO 144, JESTER ONE, LSD OM, and Al Diaz, a.k.a. BOMB ONE and later SAMO (in collaboration with Jean Michel Basquiat).

Presented in conjunction with City as Canvas. Free for Museum members; $12 students/seniors; $16 general public.

NYC: Feb 4 - Aug 24, 2014: City as Canvas

City As Canvas
http://www.mcny.org/content/city-canvas

Martin Wong, an East Village artist and collector of graffiti art, amassed a treasure trove of hundreds of works on paper and canvas—in aerosol, ink, and other mediums.

“City as Canvas” focuses on the 1970s and ’80s, featuring the work of Mr. Goodstone (Sharp), Lee QuiƱones (LEE), Christopher Ellis (Daze), Andrew Witten (Zephyr), Donald White (Dondi), Sandra Fabara (Lady Pink), Rammellzee, and Keith Haring. They are among the pioneers who laid the foundation for the New York graffiti art movement.

The artists are seminal figures in an artistic movement that spawned a worldwide phenomenon, altering music, fashion, and popular visual culture. The exhibition City as Canvas: Graffiti Art from the Martin Wong Collection begins with photographs of graffiti writing long erased from subways and buildings.

80 photos of NYC in the 1970s and 1980s

These are scenic photos of New York City back in the day. Some of them have graffiti in them. Most of the photos are amazing because they show us a New York, and a world, that doesn't exist anymore.

Special Musical Performances:

Gray

April 29th, 1979, Holman and Basquiat created the revolutionary sound/music/noise group, Gray. Gray's music can be heard on film soundtracks, such as: Basquiat, The Radiant Child, Downtown 81, Blank City and Downtown Calling. Today, original Gray member Nick Taylor and Holman make up the band.

Since re-uniting in 2010, Gray has performed live at the New Museum (New York City, July, 2011), Corcoran Gallery of Art (Washington, D.C., March, 2012) and the Parrish Museum (Watermill, November, 2012).

Ralph McDaniels

McDaniels, who has family roots in Trinidad, invested his time and money into Video Music in 1983 when hip-hop was in commercial infancy. Exposure on McDaniels’ New York show greatly boosted the popularity — and music sales — of many now famous stars such as Run-D.M.C, Notorious BIG and Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. McDaniels also used the show to spread messages of unity, non-violence, anti-drug abuse, anti-crime, political activism and self-respect to his predominately young viewing audience. Today, the show airs on NYC-TV Wednesdays at 11:30 p.m.

Todd Sines Live

From the flat fields of Ohio to the concrete jungle of New York, Todd Sines' environments; real and virtual, have served as inspiration for his unique, hybrid sound. His post punk, industrial, and hip-hop upbringings, filtered through an obsession with analogue and early digital technology, resulted in stripped down electronic funk; before minimal was mnml - it was just effective. Since his move to New York in 2003, he's worked with a variety of other artists, including !!!, Death in Vegas, Liquid Liquid's Sal Principato and Apollo Heights; he's remixed Alexander Robotnick, Paul Randolph, Robert Owens, Moonstarr, Adam Marshall, Lanoiraude and more.

NYC: Aug 13 – Sept 22, 2013: Queen Andrea - Type Crazy

Opening Reception August 13th, 2013 at 7pm

Exhibition open for viewing: August 13th –September 22nd, 2013

Type Crazy, a solo exhibition of paintings, prints, and collage works by graffiti artist and typographer Andrea von Bujdoss AKA Queen Andrea, is inspired by the artist’s endless love for typography and graffiti letterforms. With a visual language that is consistently bold and bombastic, Andrea’s new works serve as intricate and intense explorations of geometry, color, and form. Her custom, hand-drawn typography expresses a full range of styles—including sign painting, script, and vintage advertisement lettering—spelling out lyrics from popular rap songs by artists such as Nas, A Tribe Called Quest, and Jeru the Damaja. Featured in this exhibition is Andrea’s new series of collage works—ripped, torn, and pasted together into energetic compositions—which will invite the viewer to find typographic messages referring to the vibrancy and creative flavor of urban life.

The excitement, color, diversity and crazy energy of city life, and especially graffiti, is where Andrea finds her creative inspiration. Renegade cutting-edge art forms, brash subcultures and lifestyles that have sprang forth from an ever-changing urban metropolis give her the visual stimulus, the guts, and the urge to create and innovate. Her artistic style is influenced as much by her love of typography as it is themes of urban life, female superheroes, fame, the advertising age, the golden age of Hip Hop, funk and rap music, geometry, cartooning, symbolism, sign painter lettering, bling, diamonds and bright lively color.

Andrea von Bujdoss AKA Queen Andrea is a New York City based fine artist, illustrator, self-taught graffiti artist, and graphic designer. After earning her BFA in Graphic Design from Parsons School of Design, Andrea has worked for worldwide brands and has been featured in major art shows, toy shows, magazines, books, fashion lines and brand collaborations. She has also curated and exhibited in numerous exhibitions nationally, and is currently focusing on national and international solo exhibitions.

Wild Thing

Curated by Eileen Quaranto

bOb Bar is pleased to present Wild Thing, an exhibition of work by graffiti artist MS163. Please join us for an opening reception on Wednesday, July 3rd to meet the artist and celebrate her work.

In MS163’s series Wild Thing, the fictional yet familiar character “Max” from Where the Wild Things Are (1963) performs the role of the iconic Ruby Bridges—a crucial player in the civil rights movement and desegregation in 1960s New Orleans. On the one hand, MS163 celebrates the centrality of women of color in national sociopolitical movements; on the other, she begs the spectator to consider how women of color are used by these same movements. Wild Thing asks: how was Ruby, at 6 years old, deployed as a symbol of femininity, fragility, and respectability for the betterment of the African American community?

Sharon Lee De La Cruz is a prolific artist and activist in New York City. She earned a BFA from The Cooper Union, is a Fulbright scholar, and is now an MA candidate in NYU’s ITP program. She has shown in numerous venues throughout the New York metropolitan area, notably during Armory Week 2012 at the Bronx River Arts Center. She has been awarded residencies at Wonder Women and 365 Days of Print. Additionally, De La Cruz has designed a limited edition perfume bottle for Calvin Klein’s CK One Shock Street Edition For Her.

NYC, June 29 - July 27, 2013: POSE & REVOK

Pose & Revok
Uphill Both Ways

Curated by Roger Gastman

Jonathan LeVine Gallery
529 West 20th Street, 9th Floor
New York, NY 10011

Opening Reception: Saturday, June 29, 7—9pm
Show Runs: June 29—July 27, 2013
Open Tuesday through Saturday, 11am to 6pm | 212-243-3822

NEW YORK, NY (May 21, 2013) — Jonathan LeVine Gallery is pleased to present Uphill Both Ways, a two-person exhibition curated by Roger Gastman, featuring new works by Chicago-based artist Pose and Detroit-based artist Revok. In conjunction with what will be their first show in New York, the artists will also collaborate on a large-scale mural on the famed Goldman Properties wall located on Houston and Bowery streets, in lower Manhattan.

Although style, medium and techniques vary between the two artists, their work is strongly connected from a conceptual standpoint. The exhibition title Uphill Both Ways (inspired by late graffiti artist NEKST), relates to the battles Pose and Revok have faced personally with legal persecution and loss, as well as general themes of the human struggle on a macro level, one of the common threads in their bodies of work. The artists both draw inspiration directly from their environments and both of their processes involve chopping up various elements and reassembling the slices to form a synthesis of intriguing shapes, forms and textures.

Pose's works reference disparate sources—pop and comic art, skateboard and advertising graphics, collage, sign painting and graffiti. Painting portraits of the human condition, he re-appropriates the visual language of the street and overwhelming experience of consumer culture to convey a broad spectrum of emotions—pain, triumph, joy, fear, love and loss. His fragmented imagery is intended to disarm pretense, making the work universally accessible and open to interpretation. Revok creates abstract geometric panels with vibrant colors and striking patterns using found materials sourced from abandoned homes, schools, businesses and churches—sampling bits and pieces of people's lives, hopes, dreams and aspirations—reinterpreted through rich layers of history, decay and age-worn patina.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Pose (Jordan Nickel) was born in 1980 in Evanston, Illinois, and is currently based in Chicago. He began practicing graffiti in 1992 and received a painting degree from Kansas City Art Institute in 2004.

Revok (Jason Williams) was born in 1977 in Riverside, California, and began writing graffiti in 1990. In 2011, his work was included in Art in the Streets, an exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MoCA) in Los Angeles, andStreet Cred, an exhibition at the Pasadena Museum of Contemporary Art. Currently based in Detroit, Revok founded the Detroit Beautification Project in which he and his peers create murals throughout the city.

Pose and Revok are both members of The Seventh Letter, an acclaimed West Coast artist collective and Mad Society Kings (MSK), a world-renowned graffiti crew.

ABOUT THE CURATOR

Roger Gastman was raised in Bethesda, Maryland and is currently based in Los Angeles. He founded and published two magazines: While You Were Sleeping and Swindle (co-published with Shepard Fairey). In 2010, Gastman served as consulting producer for Banksy's Oscar-nominated documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop. In 2011, he was an Associate Curator for Art In The Streets, an exhibition at Museum of Contemporary Art (MoCA) in Los Angeles and in 2012, he co-authored The History of American Graffiti published by HarperCollins.
