UV Arts host a weekend celebration of Graffiti, Street Art and Mural Arts in a citywide festival, enjoying this unique and visually stimulating art form live and for free.

"Release The Pressure" festival will see 60 graffiti, street artists, and contemporary mural artists take to the streets of Derry in what can only be described as an explosion of colour. Witness an international lineup of artists working together to create art in the streets.

Street/Gallery artist and curator "Mad One" will present and team up with The Screaming Sky Gallery in Portland,OR to host this one of a kind exhibit "Printed Matters", a showcase of local and international artists, graphic designers, graffiti artists and of course avid print makers. The show will feature unique prints available in limited editions as well as in an array of print making mediums. During the opening reception we will have a handful of surprises like  plenty of sticker giveaways, free handouts throughout the night provided by our sponsors like energy drinks, clothes, magazines, dvds and limited edition items produced by showcasing artists and much more….Also did we mention 95% of the art is for Sale!

So both you and I know these types of shows are on the rise and there have been several Graffiti/Urban art themed shows throughout the city the last few years and this is one of a kind for sure “Mad One”, a Portland based street/gallery artist and curator, had the opportunity to lock down a variety of talented artists here locally,throughout the states as well as internationally for this group show.We have artists ranging from New York to California,Canada, the U.K. and beyond.

“Printed Matters” is primarily designed around supporting the urban art movement and bringing awareness to the artists involved and how they have gone from the streets to modern figures being displayed in today’s galleries and museums. Also the curator really wanted to shed light on the different mediums/methods used in printmaking and at the same time expose these rare pieces for all to see and or possibly take home. “Mad One”, a street art advocate, has taken on the duty of curating this one of a kind show as well as putting together some great line-ups in years past throughout different galleries in the U.S.

Read the part at the bottom that says if they bite your work it's okay with you. That means: don't show them your whole portfolio. Just give them a taste of what they asked for.

Designers: build your portfolio through battle, maybe win a little money

Generally, we take a pretty dim view of design contests and things that cause people to do work on spec, but there are some websites where you can battle in public for graphic arts money, which seems a bit more interesting. 

Some of you might want to use sites like these to build your portfolios, get some design exercise, and see how you shape up next to the competition. If you're in a place where US$300 is a lot of money, you might even make rent. 

Read the fine print. Often this sort of work will result in "work for hire" art, which means the copyright is sold with the design. When you sell your copyright, you can't sell that design again, but you can usually display it in your portfolio or hang the original on your wall. 

If you have a choice, licensing the "right to use" your work is a better plan. That way when the license expires, the work belongs to you again. Of course, legal and copyright law likely varies by country.
