Australia, Melbourne: April 5-7, 2013: DOES

Just Another and Does are thrilled to present 'Endless Perspectives' - a new body of work aiming to capture graffiti’s transient nature. He displays his journey both as an artist and a person through forty canvasses centred around five cities close to his heart. A series of films by Stephan Polman accompanies the artworks, allowing you to join him on this pilgrimage around the world seeking creative enlightenment.

The five cities – Amsterdam, Basel, London, Paris and Melbourne – have acted as creative refuges for Does, who felt the need to escape his hometown to cultivate his craft. A former professional soccer player who has spent much of his life in the Dutch limelight, travelling has not only been an inspiration to Does, but also an escape. Each set of canvasses contains a distinct colour combination that was chosen based on the predominant colours Does came across during his travels in that city.

‘Endless Perspectives’ signifies the infinite interpretations and unlimited ways in which art and experiences can be perceived. During the journey that led to the work exhibited, Does's outlook evolved continuously. Events that at first glance appeared to be hurdles became unsought opportunities and vice versa – it’s all just a matter of perspective: the viewers’ included.

Using his infamously meticulous letters, Does portrays the multifaceted aspects of his artwork and the inspiration surrounding him. A love letter to both cities and styles, ‘Endless Perspectives’ leaves you looking a little closer at the world around you.

Opening on Friday April 5th from 6-10pm at 48 Easey St, Collingwood. Show runs till 7th April

Peeta endeavours to realize the sculptural quality of individual letters, namely the ones that spell out his own name. Being aware of the Greco-Latin origins of today's modern alphabet which give it a certain abstract, rather than figural, quality, his task departs from this graphical history to follow the formal methods of Chinese and Islamic calligraphy. With his works, the artist always selects the specific letters "P-E-E-T-A" and breaks them from their generic typographical form, stylizing them with shape and volume beyond their mere semantic function. Thus his lettering is brought into the fluidity of the urban, where words are continuously ruptured from their own histories, readapted into idiom and gestures learned from the street.

And it is this urban terrain that Peeta is always drawn to: street walls, trains, abandoned factories. In a way, his work is record of evolving inscription—not in its traditional sense, but in terms of a fluency acquired through the urban vernacular. Peeta calls this a "geometry of writing", where the rules are changeable and words are modified, deconstructed and regenerated as they intersect with convention and the new.

Peeta, also known as Manuel Di Rita, has been active as a graffiti artist since 1993 and is currently living in Venice. He is a member of the EAD crew (Padova, Italy), FX and RWK crews (New York City) and has participated in graffiti jams and Meeting of Styles events in Europe and the Americas. His work explores the potential of sculptural lettering, both in painting and in three dimensions. Peeta has exhibited at the Santorini Biennale (2012); Megastore Gallery - The Hague (2007); Magazzini del Sale - Venice (2007-2008); Edgeart Gallery - Manchester (2008); PrettyPortal Gallery - Düsseldorf (2009); Baron Gallery and Ayden Gallery - Vancouver (2010-2011); Da Baker Gallery - New York (2010); and H+ Gallery - Lyon (2011), among many others.

RIP HIGH.CBS Amsterdam, Holland, The Netherlands

http://www.footballculture.com/2011/08/28/oorlog-op-de-middenweg-afca-sven-westendorp-rip/

Google Translate from Dutch: "Saturday afternoon took the hard core of Ajax (with graffiti writers) in zeeeeer noisily farewell to the murdered Ajax supporter Sven Westendorp. This happened on the Midway at the height of the former Ajax De Meer stadium. Impressive and stylish."

Hit the link for video of his memorial at the stadium.

HIGH.CBS was a very well-respected old-school Dutch writer from one of Holland's most prominent crews. Our deepest sympathies for his family and friends.

Holland, Amsterdam: May 27, 28, 29, 2001: Unruly

The Unruly Gallery that was set up by artist Niels Shoe Meulman is up and running. It is a new online gallery that focuses on artists instead of movements and schools. Unruly is not only a gallery but also a web shop where t-shirts, works of art, books and silk scarves are sold. The works of art can also be viewed in person by appointment at the Unruly Gallery in Amsterdam. For prices and more information, please visit unrulygallery.com.

Niels Meulman, who is also known as ‘Shoe’ abroad, set up the Unruly Gallery. He started out as a graffiti artist and had his breakthrough with Calligraffiti, which is a combination of graffiti and calligraphy. Shoe worked as a graphic designer and creative director for various companies, until he was fed up with corporate life and decided to focus entirely on his new passion, Calligraffiti. Through displaying his work at various galleries, he discovered that most galleries could not offer him what he wanted. That is when the idea was born to open his own gallery.

Art lovers can go to the gallery web shop unrulygallery.com to admire and buy work made by various international artists. In addition to the large selection of paintings, the new Calligraffiti t-shirts (for men and women), the Unruly silk scarves and various special books are available from the shop as well. The art and other products are available exclusively through unrulygallery.com.

The first exhibition will open on 27 May 2011.

The ‘Unruly Gallery Group Show 2011’ includes work of:

Mode2, Eric Haze, Bando, Boris Tellegen (Delta), Greg Lamarche, Dr. Rat (†), John Langdon, Rammellzee (†), Parra, Nik Christensen, Jon One and Wayne Horse.

The opening is for invited guests only, but the Unruly Gallery is open to the public on Saturday 28 May and Sunday 29 May between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. After those dates, it is only open to buyers who make an appointment.

The works of art can also be viewed online and are for sale from 26 May 2011 at unrulygallery.com.

CA, Los Angeles: Oct 21-Nov 21, 2010: SHOE

Throw-Ups

21 October – 21 November 2010

Opening reception
21 October 2010
19:00 – 22:00 PT

Born, raised and based in Amsterdam, Meulman began tagging “Shoe” in 1979 and became a graffiti legend by the time he was 18. In the eighties, he met New York graffiti artists like Dondi, Rammellzee, Haze, Quik and Keith Haring after which he then formed the Crime Time Kings with Bando from Paris and Mode2 from London. Together, they gave graffiti in Europe its own distinctive style.

In the nineties, he furthered his technique by apprenticing under Dutch graphic design master Anthon Beeke. Shoe proceeded to run his own design company, Caulfield & Tensing, and was a partner in advertising agency Unruly, which he later turned into a brand for silk scarves.

Shoe is recognized for revolutionizing the art of writing with Calligraffiti, an art form that combines masterful calligraphy skills with the speed and attitude of graffiti. He launched this movement in 2007 with a successful solo exhibition in Amsterdam. Since then, his Calligraffiti pieces, which he signs NSM, have been presented in various international exhibitions.

In 2010, the book Calligraffiti – The Graphic Art of Niels Shoe Meulman was launched in Berlin and Shoe has since been touring to present the book and his art.

The Project Space exhibition “Calligraffiti Throw-Ups” is a new series of carbon acrylic on linen canvas works inspired by Shoe’s love for baseball, mayhem and cosmic unconsciousness.

NY, Manhasset: July 1-27, 2010: SHOE - Calligraffiti

Don't miss this rare opportunity to meet one of the modern Dutch masters of style.

NIELS SHOE MEULMAN

Calligraffiti: Letters of Independence
Thursday, July 1 – Tuesday July 27, 2010

Opening reception for the artist: Thursday, July 1, from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m.

The Salamatina Gallery is pleased to host an unprecedented installation, Calligraffiti: Letters of Independence, by the cutting-edge artist Niels Shoe Meulman. This unique project will open on the evening of Thursday, July 1st with a live Calligraffiti performance.

During his opening-night performance, Meulman will literally rewrite the 1776 Declaration of Independence on site at the Salamatina Gallery. His Re-Declaration, which will take place over several days, will highlight all 1,337 of the historic words, resulting in 262 U.S. letter-sized pieces, executed in ink on paper. Showcasing the artistʼs fluid and hypnotic style, these “Letters” will remain on view and for sale until July 27.

According to the author Adam Eeuwens: “Calligraffiti is a combination of traditional calligraphy coupled with the speed of modern-day graffiti. It is an amalgam of an ancient, refined art form, fused with the raw force of rebellious street art. It combines the rhythm and regularity of Frakturʼs precise stroke with the perfect accidents of the vertical drip and splatter of the horizontal drop, creating a synthesis of opposites.” Meulman, one of the pioneers of this revolutionary art form, will break new ground by reinterpreting a document of the length and significance of the Declaration of Independence. The document has special meaning for the Amsterdam-based artist, who embraces elements of American culture as a whole, whether it be Pop Art, advertising, product packaging, skateboarding, graffiti or car design.

“My work is dedicated to the art of writing,” Meulman explains. “I am inspired by ancient Japanese brush characters, Arabic pictorial script, illuminated medieval books and flourish-filled quill writing, of which the Declaration of Independence is one of the most beautiful and eloquent examples. My interest in this document runs deeper than its being an emblem of U.S. courage and democracy. Its powerful words set forth human rights which are universal and resonate with my own personal beliefs, especially with regards to taking risks in order to exercise oneʼs freedom of expression.”
