How to remove metadata from image files

Why? Because metadata in your photos can contain the exact location the picture was taken in, your name, your camera's serial number, and all kinds of other stuff that doesn't need to be posted to the web.

There are some problems with this idea you should be aware of. These are the ones I can see right away:

* YouTube gets the original, with the faces (It would be better to use your own tool that doesn't require uploading).

* People might confuse uploading with publishing and publish the wrong one.

* There might be metadata in the video that could identify people related to the video that isn't deleted. A further tool would be needed for that.

* Uploading video requires a login, and your IP address is no doubt logged, so the publisher of the video is always exposed, along with the computer or device used to upload.

You might have noticed that I removed sharing icons from this blog. It's not that I don't want you to share posts, it's that I want to help preserve the online privacy of my blog readers from the icons, which can track you across the web.

Sharing on social nets is fun though, and I encourage you to do it the old fashioned way whenever you wish, by copying the web address in your browser window.

For the record, I also don't have a Facebook profile (not planning to) or an Art Crimes Twitter presence. If you see "art crimes" posing on a social network, they are either just fronting or some UK arts organization or other poorly named unrelated group.

I'm very grateful to @AllCityPlague who has been tweeting Art Crimes news and events postings, so you all should follow him or her on Twitter if that's where you wish to get your news.

Here are some things you can do.

Get Firefox
Get DuckDuckGo search plugin

Log out of Google, YouTube, Picassa, Blogger, Gmail, G+, and so on, when you're done using one, so you're not dragging your browsing history around for them to collect.

Sure, it's a tiny hassle to log back in, but you can keep your passwords in a password safe app on your phone.

(You're not reusing your passwords, are you?? Good. Because passwords keep getting posted publicly on the internet.)

Your activities are being collected by DoubleClick, which Google owns also, and Google ads, even when you are not on a Google-owned website.

So get an ad blocker too. Adblock Plus is great.
