Germany, Crimmitschau: Aug 29 - 31 - 80 artists at IBUg

IBUg 2014:
Festival for urban art and culture in Crimmitschau, Germany

This weekend the IBUg is going to the next round! For the 9th time this unique festival transforms an industrial wasteland into a synthesis of the arts. Started 2006 by Tasso (Maclaim Crew) as a small and unofficial graffiti meeting in Meerane the project became a festival of international renown over the years, featuring artists from all over the world, fascinating art pieces, a colorful program and an unique atmosphere. In 2014 IBUg festival is taking place in Crimmitschau, the “city of a hundred chimneys”, for the first time – and this simultaneously in two locations: the former brothers Pfau cloth mill and the nearby area around Schützenplatz!

Since last Friday more than 80 artists - creative folks of the steady growing IBUg-family - will transform both locations into a total artwork by graffiti, paste ups, impressive murals, detailed illustrations, spectacular installations and multimedia projections within a one-week creative phase. There will be Zone56 (Glauchau), Flamat (Leipzig), Threehouse (Leipzig), HiFi (Dortmund), Quintessenz (Berlin) or Loomit (München)  and international guests like Faunagraphic and Rocket (Great Britain), Amin (France), Duncan Passmore (Ireland), Pinche (Spain), Key Detail (Belarus), Akuma und Digo (Brasil), Alaniz (Argentina) or Benuz (Mexico), to just name a few.

The results of their work is gonna be displayed from Friday the 29th till Sunday the 31st of August as part of a festival called "IBUg fabric + leather“. The extensive program furthermore includes guided tours of the IBUg area and the historical production facilities of the west saxonian textile industry that not just shows multifaceted, high-standard art, but also let the visitors explore more than 130 years of industrial history. On Saturday numerous lectures about „street culture and creative industries" are given by taking the example of tree creative enterprises. The following Sunday experts discuss the question of „How do we want to live and work?“. Besides that the festival-weekend comes up with the exhibition "IBArt" of various artist´s artworks, movies, an art market, chillout area and a silkscreen printing workshop. Of course there´ll be the traditional IBUg-party – which is going down twice this year!  Acts like DJ Marc Hype (Dusty Donuts, MPM Rec, Berlin), Franz! (Muna, Paracou, Thurania), Iknaz and Bear With Me (Das Konglomerat, Weimar), Beppo S. & Peter B. (Staubsound, Leipzig), Jahmica & die Obskuriosen (Zwangsvulgaristen, Leipzig) or  DJ Sir Mole (Dresden) gonna be live on stage and will certainly inflame the mood to the boiling point.

Opening October 17, 2013, the Coral Gables Museum will present Concrete Paradise: Miami Marine Stadium, an original exhibition devoted to Miami Marine Stadium’s flashy past, its edgy present, and its spectacular proposed comeback as a world-class sports and performance venue. Curated by renowned author and architectural conservator, Rosa Lowinger, this interactive exhibit will bring the glory days of Miami’s most daringly modern structure back to life through stunning video footage, rare photos and keepsakes, original art installations, photo murals of the stadium’s infamous graffiti, and an antique hydroplane.

The exhibit will feature images of the extraordinary graffiti that constantly evolves on the walls of the stadium and works by contemporary artists who have been inspired by the building itself. These latter works-- which include sculpture, painting, video and photography-- demonstrate the profound influence the stadium and its environs have had on visual artists at a national level.

Throughout its run at the museum, a full schedule of special events, tours, and lectures will be offered to the general public, allowing visitors to learn more about one of Miami’s most fascinating historic landmarks.

OR, Portland: Nov 7 - 30, 2013: Augustine Kofie / Jerry Joker Inscoe / Christopher Derek Bruno

Three The Hard Way:
Augustine Kofie / Jerry Joker Inscoe / Christopher Derek Bruno

Three-person exhibition curated by Sven Davis

Breeze Block Gallery Portland OR.
7 November – 30 November 2013 (opens First Thursday)

For the month of November, Breeze Block Gallery is very proud to present Three The Hard Way; a three-person exhibition featuring Augustine Kofie, Jerry Joker Inscoe and Christopher Derek Bruno.

All three artists come from a graffiti background, and are firmly established members of the pioneering Transcend graffiti collective. These highly versatile artists are equally known for their large-scale mural projects, as well as their own very individual voices in a gallery setting. Traditional letterforms are abstracted into geometric configurations within their work; and dimension, form and space are considered and explored within their dynamic compositions.

Their collective approach to art-making is steeped in academic discourse, and whilst retaining the vibrancy of their graffiti backgrounds, traditional art movements such as Futurism, Abstract Expressionism and Precisionism are also embraced by the visual vocabulary imbued within their work.

The exhibition title itself is a literal reference to the historical terminology Hard-Edge painting; which was first coined in the late fifties and used to describe intense and abrupt delineation of color within the burgeoning Geometric Abstraction and Op-art movements. Whilst these artists acknowledge and embrace movements of the past, they confidently stand outside of historical classification and have established themselves as a core group of protagonists defining a contemporary movement they have made their own.

Whilst the three artists have shown together previously in larger group exhibitions, Three The Hard Way is the first time that this trifecta has shown together in a collaborative environment.

For the month of November the three artists will take over both of Breeze Block’s gallery spaces for an installation.

Germany, Frankfurt: Sept. 5 - Oct. 27, 2013 - Street-Art Brazil - Murals

THE SCHIRN KUNSTHALLE FRANKFURT PRESENTS

STREET-ART BRAZIL

5 September – 27 October 2013
Press preview: Wednesday, 4 September, 2013, 11 a.m.

In conjunction with Brazil's appearance as guest of honour at the Frankfurt Book Fair in 2013, the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt is presenting the multifaceted world of Brazilian graffiti art for the first time ever in Germany. The major cities of Brazil are home to one of the world's most vital and fascinating graffiti scenes.

Eleven artists and artist groups from São Paulo and other Brazilian cities have been invited to exhibit their paintings in urban settings throughout Frankfurt, beginning with the Schirn building, and thus to alter the everyday image of the city. Their works include figurative and abstract, light-hearted and socially critical paintings ranging from oversized murals to unpretentious, ephemeral signs and symbols. They will appear, among other places, on bank towers, bridge abutments on the banks of the Main, the floor of the "Hauptwache", "St. Matthäus" Church and the former city police presidium.

Yet another highlight is a painted subway train. Known as a "whole train", this form of graffiti is regarded as the supreme discipline among graffiti artists. A mobile app developed specifically for the exhibition featuring a wealth of background information and artists' videos is available to help visitors navigate as they stroll through downtown Frankfurt.

The metropolis of São Paulo is a leading centre of Brazilian street art, rivaled only by Rio de Janeiro and Curitiba. Since the mid-1980s, the local scene in that city has evolved into one of the most vital and artistically diverse street-art cultures in the world. It is characterized by highly distinctive and extremely varied interventions in urban space – and it is omnipresent in São Paulo.

After twenty years of military dictatorship, the strong desire to promote the free expression of public opinion led to the growth of a politically motivated counter-culture. In contrast to the global scene, graffiti is not only tolerated in the cities of Brazil, it has been accepted to a certain extent as part of the visual culture. Brazilians distinguish between pixação, the Brazilian form of tagging, and graffiti, as represented by large-scale figurative and abstract murals of the type painted by the eleven artists invited to Frankfurt by the Schirn.

Chronologically speaking, "Street-Art Brazil" begins with representatives of the first generation of grafiteiros (Vitché, Speto and Tinho). Born in the late 1960s and early 1970s, they began invading the streets with their paintings after the fall of the military dictatorship, thus giving voice to the desire to promote the free expression of public opinion after years of silence during and after the oppressive rule of the military regime. Facing a shortage of artistic resources, they opted, as they still do today, for wall paint and rollers in addition to relatively expensive spray cans.

THE ARTISTS

Herbert Baglione, Gais, Rimon Guimarães, Jana Joana & Vitché, Nunca, Onesto, Alexandre Orion, Speto, Fefe Talavera, Tinho, Zezão

Zezão's blue, ornamental arabesques derive a strong social component from the settings in which they appear. They lend a peculiar beauty to some of the poorest and most derelict quarters of São Paulo. His arabesques not only cover flat walls, they wrap themselves three-dimensionally around objects in their environment, such as the ruins left behind by fire in the Favela do Moinho. In Frankfurt, Zezão's works grace the dark corners of the Untermain Bridge and draw attention to the ceiling in the east arcade to the Schirn building for the very first time.

Nunca gives expression to the Brazilian roots of his paintings in his works presented in Frankfurt. On the firewall of the building at Niddastraße 64, he is painting the sequel to a mural painted in São Paulo in August 2013 in the original scale. A large reproduction of the painting begun in Brazil can be seen in the rotunda of the Schirn. His figures are composed collage-style from indigenous and African motifs and elements of contemporary everyday Brazilian and European consumer culture. They are testaments to the quest for a uniquely Brazilian identity.

The hoarding around the Stadthaus construction site that runs alongside the Schirn building is the setting for vividly coloured works by Gais. The theme of his geometric paintings is the invisible world that lies behind things. By placing abstract paintings in the Favelas of Rio de Janeiro, he exposes this painting style, which is associated with high culture in the field of visual art, to a broader public. With his two-dimensional pictures he also creates accessible spaces which invite the viewer to become a part of his art with all five senses. Thus

Gais' work is very closely related to Brazilian installation art, the theme of another exhibition of Brazilian art scheduled to begin on 2 October 2013 ("Brasiliana. Installations from 1960 to the present", 2 October 2013 to 5 January 2014).

Dream worlds populated by fantastical beings play a major role in the paintings of the artist duo Jana Joana & Vitché, who have been working together for fifteen years. Their clowns, harlequins and birds shape the face of the entire Cambuci district in São Paulo, where Vitché was born and the two artists live today. Vitché is one of the pioneers of the Brazilian scene, and stands out from the international scene with his works in the style of folk art. Yet it was hip-hop and breakdancing that led him to graffiti. Passers-by will find his poetic paintings on the walls on both sides of the outside stairway at the Schirn.

Herbert Baglione achieved the transition from his image as a graffiti-writer to that of a street artist in 1997 by disseminating a written message in the streets of São Paulo announcing that his pseudonym "Cobal" was dead. Since then, he has worked under his real name, and paints primarily ghostly-looking creatures on streets and pavements – figures that relate to the buildings and physical features in their surroundings. The broad, open square of the Hauptwache serves as the canvas for his work in Frankfurt. At 900 square metres, this is the largest surface area painted by an artist for this exhibition.

Onesto's works reflect spontaneous situational encounters with pedestrians. Onesto inscribes the events that unfold in the microcosm of the city into just such places, thereby attracting the critical attention of viewers to political or social issues. His work in Frankfurt will appear on two buildings on Neue Mainzer Straße 57 and 59.

In his "Ossario" (graveyard) project, Alexandre Orion does not merely use the exhaust-blackened walls of a tunnel São Paulo as the substrate for his intervention. The series of skulls that extends over 300 metres of wall was created by wiping away the accumulated soot. Thus the wall scarred by air pollution is the sole material for his painting. Orion adds nothing to the city; he draws from it. Although his action did not meet the criterion for declaring graffiti a crime – defacing a public surface – the painting was removed by the city government and thus fell victim to aesthetic and substantive censorship. Orion uses paint mixed with soot from São Paulo as the material for his 400-square-metre painting on the Sparkasse building on Junghofstraße 27.

Before public advertising was officially banned in São Paulo in 2007, Fefe Talavera used posters and billboards as points of intervention. Today the artist prints her own letters and combines them in large-scale "monster paintings". Talavera's figures call to mind brightly coloured Alebrijes – paper-maché figures of the kind originally created by Pedro Linares in 1936 and inspired by fantastical dreams – which have since become an integral part of Mexican folk art. The vividly coloured dragon figure on the glass portal of the twin towers of the Deutsche Bank echoes the vertical character of the building.

Born in Curitiba in 1988, Rimon Guimarães views the act of painting on the street as performance per se. The city is his stage, passers-by his audience. He accompanies his spraying with dance, vocals and music, which he produces himself with the aid of such everyday objects as buckets or bicycle bells and with his own voice. Like the artist's graffiti, his music is inspired by traditional African art and culture. His large, brightly coloured mural can be seen on the hoarding at the construction site of the former KfW building at Bockenheimer Landstraße 102-104. In April 2013, before the building was razed, the Schirn Kunsthalle hosted the Graffiti Academy here.

The stories Speto tells in his murals are inspired by the north-Brazilian tradition of "Literatura de Cordel". These mystical tales illustrated with woodcuts were written during a period of cultural blending in the seventeenth century. They are composed of a collage of indigenous legends, Christian motifs and elements of African culture. As a vehicle for the processing of current developments in society, "Literatura de Cordel" also served as a medium of communication. As such, its function is similar to that of Brazilian graffiti today. The point of departure for Speto's painting on the façade of the St. Matthäus Church in Frankfurt is a Cordel poem written by the artist about a bizarre day in the life of a "motoboy". Paulista (residents of São Paulo) use this term in reference to the roughly 220,000 bicycle couriers in the city, many of whom lose their lives on daily trips through the heavy urban traffic.

The countless abductions of children in the 1990s are the theme of Tinho's paintings. He presents images of bound, weeping and fearfully crouching children based on photos from missing person ads and search queries on tomato packages or milk cartons. In most cases, these painted children gaze directly into the eyes of the viewer, yet they remain isolated and lonely nonetheless. Some of his figures appear alone beneath city rail tracks, in front of garage doors or behind bushes, as if they were actually present at these places in the city. He often incorporates them into backgrounds of his own design featuring high-rise buildings and traffic scenes typical of São Paulo. The former Frankfurt police presidium serves as the canvas for his emotionally gripping works.

In collaboration with Onesto, Tinho will also be painting a Frankfurt subway train. With this work, the two artists address yet another aspect of the graffiti scene, in which collective undertakings play a crucial role.

Germany, Zwickau: Aug 30 - Sept 1, 2013: IBUg Festival

IBUg 2013
Urban Culture Festival
in Zwickau, Germany

The well acclaimed IBUg festival 2013 will be on in Zwickau, Germany, the event starts in its 8th round. What began as a tiny and non-public graffiti meeting in 2006 in the small town of Meerane soon evolved into a distinguished arts project of international reputation. With artists from all over the world, fascinating pieces of art and the very athmosphere you’ll only find at IBUg.

“Zwickauer Eisenwerk” is the name of this year’s IBUg location. Up to the mid-nineties this plant was birthplace of engine blocks, gearbox castings, pumps and panels. Starting on August, 23rd, just about 100 artists from Germany, Austria, France, Switzerland, Spain, Argentina and Belarus will transform the underused industrial ground into a total work of art showing installations, graffiti, paintings and visuals. There’s not more than one week of pure creativity for artists such as Chromeo and Koala, Lean Frizzera, Mati Quiroga, Clara Reichertz, El Marian and Milu Correch, benjAMIN and Valenciennes, Pinche, Key Detail, Loomit, Atem, Quintessenz Creation and Threehouse.

>From August, 30th to September, 1st, the IBUg festival presents urban art and culture to visitors. There one can have a close look onto the creative work of the IBUg family and our fellow guests. As it is more than a off gallery IBUg also offers guided tours through the re-designed “Eisenwerk”, a cinema showing documentary films of IBUg artists and their work, lectures with Loomit (Munich-based german graffiti artist), panel discussions, a gallery and art market, and of course the notorious IBUg festival party. What is new in this round is the IBUg lounge, a dance theatre and the “IBArt” art exibition.

"Its in Our Blood" Artist: Griffin One / Special Delivery Exhibit 2012
Griffin Wall & background pillar "Candel-totempole" are found on the top floor/3rd story.

SPECIAL DELIVERY is a large scale mural exhibition featuring a number of prolific street artists from the Oakland / San Francisco Bay Area.

We’re bringing SPECIAL DELIVERY back to home base and stepping up our game by painting an entire 36,000 square foot, three story warehouse! The building we have been invited to paint has been vacant for over a decade and has a long history of presence in the local graffiti art scene. It was recently purchased by a Bay Area based firm with plans to refurbish the building into a permanent office facility. The owner of the company happens to be on the board for the OMCA (Oakland Museum of California) . As an inspired art enthusiast, he noticed some of the graffiti in the building was done by the very same artists whom are currently exhibiting at the OMCA. Saddened by the destruction of this museum worthy artwork and the cultural history behind it, he asked Endless Canvas to invite the artists back to restore the graffiti in the warehouse.

What has resulted is a three part project. Part one: a professional photographer has documented all of the graffiti pieces in the building. Part two: we will be hosting the SPECIAL DELIVERY Art Show. For this we have invited over 20 of the Bay Area’s most prolific street artists to paint the interior space of the building, to be exhibited for public view in September. The new pieces will be documented thoroughly then later removed for necessary renovation of the warehouse. It will take about a year to refurbish the building. Once this process is complete, a selection of artists will be invited back to install permanent murals on the interior walls of the building. All three stages will be documented and followed by a published book sharing the project as a whole.

All of the participating artists have spent a significant amount of time creating works of public art in the Bay Area. Some have been featured in museums and documentaries and others are home town heroes in the underground art scene.

UK, London: November 4 - 6, 2011: Heaven & Earth

Acclaimed British surrealist graffiti artist Sickboy returns this November with his second major London solo show:

Heaven & Earth

A celebration of earthly sins and heavenly fantasies, with collaborations from some of the biggest names in the global scene, Heaven & Earth sees Sickboy figuratively fall from grace into one of his own worlds, calling upon 12 art figureheads to plunge into the depths of darkest conscious.

Those familiar with Sickboy's prolific street work such as the iconic 'Temple' (sprayed in the McDonalds palette on walls and wheelie bins worldwide) will witness the deeper development of the artist's visual vocabulary with his new body of work. Inspired by semiotics and symbolism, Renaissance paintings and the surreal landscape workings of artists like Hieronymus Bosch, Sickboy confesses all in this show, with meticulously-detailed paintings containing deeply personal narratives alongside his surrealist depictions of the world.

The artist also presents four major installations which include a walk-in confessional booth (with a resident pastor who will be appearing at various service times throughout the opening), and an installation which sees a who's who of eminent artists joining Sickboy on his cathartic journey including: D*Face, Eine, Anthony Lister, Paul Insect, Vhils, Conor Harrington, Xenz, Word to Mother, Will Barras, Eelus, Mudwig and Hush – all of whom feature in a special collaborative element of the show.

The art exorcism doesn't just end there. After years of brainwashing the public with his temple and slogans such as 'Save the Youth', Sickboy is expanding his ethos of 'art for the people' and inviting the global public to become part of his show by submitting their anonymous confessions to him, which will become one of the main installations, entitled CONFESS.

Dray Walk, The Old Truman Brewery, 91 Brick Lane, London, E1 6QL.

Private view Thursday 3rd November 18:00-22:00
Open to the public Friday 4th November - Sunday 6th November 12:00-19:00
