Since graffiti emerged as a powerful form of self-expression on New York City streets in the 1970s, the city has grown into the epicenter of the contemporary street art movement. Ephemeral, often anonymous, and characterized by countless styles and techniques, street art appeals directly to passersby in often unexpected places, and on digital devices globally.

Join us for a conversation about the influence of the city in the storytelling of street artists and graffiti artists and how that influence is reflected in the work as it moves into galleries and museums.  This program is inspired by and delves into the themes of our exhibition Chris “Daze” Ellis: The City is My Muse.

Steven Harrington, Editor-in-Chief, and Jaime Rojo, Editor of Photography, founders of BrooklynStreetArt.com, which has been documenting street art around the world for nearly a decade.

DAZE, a major graffiti and street artist in New York since the late 1970s, whose work is currently on view at the Museum.

Swoon, one of the Brooklyn's most celebrated street artists, exhibits her work at museums around the world, including her 2014 exhibition, Submerged Motherlands, at the Brooklyn Museum.

Blazing a trail for graffiti art back in the 1970s, New York City teens claimed the city’s walls and mass transit system for their canvases—and in the process invented a new art form.

Jay J.SON Edlin, veteran graffiti artist, historian, and author of Graffiti 365 (Harry N. Abrams, 2011), discusses graffiti and street art with revolutionary but unsung writers of the ‘70s: icons COCO 144, JESTER ONE, LSD OM, and Al Diaz, a.k.a. BOMB ONE and later SAMO (in collaboration with Jean Michel Basquiat).

The Fridge is presenting the first solo show from Asad “ULTRA” Walker, a DC graffiti artist who has been creating work for 30 years. At quiet walks in dangerous placesULTRA will show a series of all new portraits using his signature lean, angular style. ULTRA’s portraits are inspired by the people he has seen while working in the early morning hours on the streets of DC.

“When you’re out late in DC, you see a life that most people don’t experience. You notice these crazy, beautiful things that a normal person would overlook. I want to take the images and personalities of these people I’ve met into a gallery setting. I'm painting portraits of everyday people like a bouncer who has been working for 25 years and more known DC figures like H.R. from Bad Brains. I want to show the beauty of the people I see around me,” says ULTRA.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

ULTRA’s paintings use geometric shapes painted in faint monochromatic tones that layer to form light and shadow. He started writing HOBO in DC-style go-go graffiti in 1981. In the late 80’s, he moved to NYC where he picked up ideas for new styles and approaches to his art. When he moved back to DC, he changed his name to ULTRA after Ultraman, a Japanese television series that was his favorite growing up. Over his career, ULTRA took a love for graffiti styles with seemingly simple designs, like straight letters, to develop his signature streamlined, angular style.

ULTRA has previously shown work at the Smithsonian, MOCA Gallery, Workhouse Gallery, Art Whino, Lamont Bishop Gallery, Torpedo Factory, and more.

INTRO TO GRAF WORKSHOP; October 14, 1 – 3pm: Learn how to start creating your own graffiti art from veteran artist ULTRA who has watched styles in DC and NY develop for three decades. $20 for materials and supplies.

FILM SCREENING/TALK BACK; October 21, 1 – 3pm: A screening and talk back featuring three films, including the 2008 Paris Bustillos film BORF! about internationally known, DC stencil graffiti artist John Tsombikos. BORF showedPotty-trained at Gunpoint at The Fridge in 2010.

CLOSING PARTY/ARTIST TALK; October 28, 1-3pm: An informal talk about the artist’s history, influences and style.

Buff Monster – The signature “Super Happy Pink” style of Buff Monster has been emblazoned across walls in nearly every major U.S. city, as well as cities throughout Europe. His work has also appeared in the The Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, and major contemporary arts and culture magazines, such as Juxtapoz and Nylon.

Adam Cost (AKA COST) – Considered one of the Godfathers of the term “Street Art,” Adam Cost was instrumental in the shift from graffiti art – typically spray paint on walls – to wheatpasting and large paint roller pieces that attacked the walls of NYC throughout the 90s. Still producing work today, Cost has been involved in decades of Graffiti history.

Hrag Vartanian – Founder of the tremendously influential arts and culture blog, Hyperallergic, Hrag has also written for The Huffington Post, NYFA Current and The Brooklyn Rail.

David Meade – Founder and tour guide for Street Art Walk, David Meade leads an ever-changing walking tour throughout Brooklyn, hosting a tour of the changing landscape of Street Art.

IL, Chicago: September 19 opens for fall 2012: James Prigoff - The History of Graffiti

Loyola University Chicago's School of Communication will host the work of James Prigoff, spraycan art photographer, for an exhibit opening on Wednesday, September 19, 2012 in Chicago.

This event is free and open to the public, and will include a lecture on the history of graffiti by Prigoff at 3:00 p.m. at 111 E. Pearson in Regents Hall that we strongly encourage folks to attend.

Then, beginning at 5:30 p.m in the School of Communication at 51 E. Pearson, a Chicago artist will do a live graffiti demonstration and we will open the gallery to tours. The photographer and artist will host a Q&A of their work, and a reception with drinks and hors d'oeuvres will commence.

James Prigoff is an author, photographer and lecturer on the subject of worldwide urban murals. He is one of the most important photographers of aerosol art on the international scene. He started worldwide documentation of murals in the late 1960s. His interest would eventually lead him to aerosol art (graffiti). His personal photographs comprise one of the most extensive collections of aerosol art in the world. During the late 1970s and the early 1980s, Prigoff documented many aerosol art movements (from their infancy) across the United States and abroad. He is the author of "Spraycan Art," a premiere resource in the study of modern day graffiti. He has lectured extensively around the world and is credited as being one of the major forces in giving dignity and credibility to an art form that once was considered to be only vandalism.
