Italy, Venice Lido: May 16-June 10, 2013: FLYCAT

SKRIPTORIA

“Nuovo Rinascimento Scrittorio”

SKRIPTORIA Manifesto 2013
"New Writing Renaissance"

It was San Benedetto (IV century AD.), Founder of the Benedictine order who in each monastery prepared an assessment library. So were born the 'scriptoria', laboratories for the production of illuminated manuscripts that represented a point of convergence between writing, decoration and illustration in a harmonization of its parts that emphasized its value.

Under the reign of Charlemagne (VIII sec.) Is implemented the 'scribal reform', or 'Carolingian Renaissance' is imposed where a model of writing approved subject to limitations such as the elimination of ligatures between letters and also of many abbreviations, this in order to facilitate the understanding and thus dissemination of texts with it made one very Mannerist style: the 'tiny carolina ', then fall into disuse during the Middle Ages in favor of the Gothic script and then be resumed by the humanists and was later the basis of the modern characters printing.

From the thirteenth century, the heritage of the 'letters' ceased to be an exclusive monopoly by the clergy, with the '' Humanism 'and' Renaissance 'thanks to the growth of universities, the scribal practice and with it that of the miniature also became a discipline of secularism. With this step the 'letters' are enriched with strong ornamental elements and zoomorphic figures that go to strengthen the structure.

In the twentieth century, the 'letters' regain their energy and are released in the schedules and constraints which they were subjected, began a 'New Renaissance Writing', from darkness the subway system of the modern metropolis branching out like a virus through transport networks underground world. Those that were erected in monasteries now arise in the subway tunnels. The ancient 'scriptoria' get rid of the constraint on the third letter 'C' and replacing it with the letter "K", the 21st of 'order, are transformed into "SKRIPTORIA".

First train cars become the new scrolls on which give the new codes desecrating a new artistic reform, then, thanks to a also voluntary emergence of open spaces so they can be read and rewritten by a wider audience.

The 26 letters of the 'Roman Latin Alphabet represent as many 26 armies composed of troops of contemporary warrior monks (from the greek monachos, solitary person), ready to fight for the protection and preservation of the power of letters.

As spokesman for this 'New Renaissance Writing', as a student of The Grand Master: The Ramm: Ell: Zee and representative of the Ikonoklast Panzerism and Gothic Futurism, I can also say that I draw inspiration from the Italian Futurist Movement consecrated with his Manifesto in 1909, finding in particular in its point 3 a strong synapses: The literature to date exalted thoughtful immobility, ecstasy, and sleep.

We want to exalt aggressive action, a feverish insomnia, the step of running, jumping deadly, the punch and the slap. My letters are equipped with an armor that protects them and which enables them to fight for the preservation of language and knowledge, Their power also lies in the freedom of movement and dynamism, here is no longer important grammatical value of the 'training' that the letters constitute but the essence is in every single frame-letter.

“Printed Matters” is primarily designed around supporting the urban art movement and bringing awareness to the artists involved and how they have gone from the streets to modern figures being displayed in today’s galleries and museums. France, Paris: NOW until June 1, 2013: Bom.k solo show

BOM.K . Vertiges & Somnolence, Solo Show

Galerie Itinerrance . 7bis, rue René Goscinny 75013 Paris

Exhibition runs from April 24th till June 1st 2013

Street art gallery Itinerrance, responsible of transforming Paris into an open air street art museum, is proud to announce the first solo show of the French urban art legend BOM.K entitled ‘Vertiges & Somnolence‘.

“Vertiges & Somnolence (Dizziness and Drowsiness) is a warning to the public as most of my paintings are done without the intention of pleasing. This is a way for me to focus on the instant of an idea, paint it, and let it provoke reactions, rejections and interrogations.” Bom.k

Bom.k, founder of the legendary french crew Da Mental Vaporz, has always been one of a kind in France’s Graffiti scene. One only has to look at his drawings, canvases and walls to be convinced. Born and raised in Paris southern suburbs, self though by necessity, he developed his unique style in the streets and abandoned factories of his youth. Quickly, he set himself free from Graffiti’s traditional rules, to follow his own road and create a unique universe, full of distorted monsters, screaming flesh, hybrid sexual creatures, claustrophobic cities and hellish visions.

Beyond the themes he explores, what first strikes viewers when discovering his work, is the incredible dexterity with which he handles spray cans. No one is supposed to draw such thin lines with this rudimentary tool, just like no one is supposed to reach this degree of precision. Spray cans simply haven’t been invented for that. And yet, thanks to the days, weeks and years he’s spent locked in his studio, taming the cans’ pressure, carving minicaps in their plastic leads, Bom.k has managed to reach every artists holly grail: an original touch, a unique style, immediately recognizable by the public, that has earned him the respect and admiration of his pears.

Thank god, the women Bom.k creates don’t exist. They are just fantasies, a mirage of his imagination. Just like his B-boys or his monsters, the idea here isn’t merely to try and reproduce realty but rather to explore their inhumanity. To elevate to the rank of pure beauty, the ugliness, sickness and abnormality of these lost souls. Their heads have disappeared, replaced by spray can nozzles. Their terrifying bone structures create flesh puzzles, like if Chernobyl had created sexual hybrids, both intriguing and fascinating. Despite the initial rejection they provoke, his hardcore creatures, stuck in abnormal pornographic poses, can’t help but create a weird sexual tension, repulsive, fascinating and attractive at the same time…

INSA: animated the hard way

Panama, Panama City: Mural by Boa Mistura (Spain)

BOA MISTURA
SOMOS LUZ (WE ARE LIGHT). 2013
Begonia I building. Avda. de los Poetas. El Chorrillo (Panamá).

"Somos Luz" ("We are Light") is the message painted on 50 houses at the building Begonia I in the neighborhood of El Chorrillo (Panama City). It was made by Spanish artist collective Boa Mistura with the neighbors' help.

Boa Mistura was inspired by the neighborhood identity. The starting point is the color grid spontaneously generated by every neighbor when they paint only the part of the building that they understand as their house. The new typography layer modifies this grid losing the housing unit in favor of the community concept.

The message aims to inspire daily. Not only the neighbors, but other people that walk by the building every day, reminding them that every person is invaluable, regardless of where they really live.

The scale of the work (more than 2000 square meters) allows it to be inhabited, changing at every moment with the interaction. It is not just the façade, corridors and stairways were also painted and converted into abstract color compositions that are the new environment for daily scenes like clothes hanging or people on the balcony.

The project was sponsored by the Bienal del Sur in Panama, and is part of the CROSSROADS series, in which Boa Mistura is using participative urban art as a tool for encourage in rundown communities, working with the local residents in the improvement of their own space.

BOA MISTURA
SOMOS LUZ. 2013

NYC: May 21-June 30, 2013: Girls on Top Crew

bOb bar presents the Girls On Top (GOT)—UK's first all-female graffiti crew formed in 2000 by Chock and Ned to unite female graffiti artists.

Introducing NYC to 5 members (Chock, Luna, Lyns, Pixie, and Syrup), the show represents each individual's style. Exploring the limits of graffiti aesthetics through mediums including embroidery, collage, and customized novelty items, they illustrate their experiences within a male-dominated graffiti culture.

The Girls On Top host all-girl graffiti jams, which have gained popularity internationally. Building momentum within the scene and attracting interest from female talent, their popularity enabled them to build a wide contact base and travel plans (Europe, China, Russia, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa). As teachers of the art form in a plethora of settings to young and old alike, GOT spreads a positive message for graffiti artists across the globe.

Colombia, Caragena: Graffiti artists paint the biggest mural in Colombia

The Biggest Graffiti Mural in Colombia Is a Tribute to African-Colombian Women

Cartagena, one of Colombia’s touristic gems, welcomed seven of the most famous graffiti artists in the country. The goal: to create the biggest graffiti in the country with an approximate surface area of 400 m2 and more than 35 m high.

For 6 days and nights in 2012, the artists Ospen, Cazdos, Ecks, Zas, Dexs, Skida and Yurika, members of the well-known Vertigo Graffiti Crew created ‘Prisma Afro’, an artwork of unprecedented dimensions with the intention of paying a tribute to the African-Colombian women.

The message to be transmitted through ‘Prism Afro’ was a challenge in itself. “We wanted to portray the genuine black woman, not the party- and curvy-like stereotype, but her human and mother-like qualities instead,” explained ZAS, the only woman member of the crew.

A prism gravitates in her hands as a metaphor of her power of transformation, which is revealed by the colors and geometrical figures that burst from it. The artwork also includes elements of the iconic architecture of Cartagena and New York wildstyle letters that express “Black Power”.

Even before starting the first sketches, the team knew that it wanted to include graffiti aesthetics to give the work a special vitality and uniqueness. “We wanted people to automatically recognize that this striking image was painted by the same guys that paint in the streets, the same kids who are often victims of prejudices,” says Camilo Fidel López, Director of Creativity of Vertigo Graffiti, a cultural initiative that aims to prove that graffiti is a substitute for violence and vices among kids and communities.

Despite the long days, the hot weather, the strong winds, and the fact that they were working at high elevation, these 7 artists achieved, in a record time of 6 days, the creation of this amazing and enormous mural. All this was possible thanks to the invitation of Fundación Chao Racismo (‘Good-bye Racism Foundation’ in English) and the support of the Still Hotel located in Cartagena, which authorized Vertigo Graffiti to paint its 12-story high hotel facade.

This was a dream-come-true to these seven artists. They had always wanted to paint a large-format mural in one of the best locations in Cartagena, a few blocks away from the historical city, while at the same time communicating the message of respect and support of the African culture in Colombia.

CA, San Francisco: May 31, 2013: Vogue TDK solo show

VOGUE

1AM Gallery has a new solo show featuring spray paint on canvas and installation pieces by Vogue. "How We Do", opening May 31st, from 6:30-9:30pm, will exhibit a collection of images that represent the mastery of the aerosol art form and the world of street culture.

Here in the bay, daily life revolves around the day-to-day hustle and bustle of screeching car tires and passing train cars. As a long-time Bay Area native, Vogue's pieces are representations of the West Coast hustler’s daily fight.

"How We Do" will surprise viewers with the sheer potential of spray paint as an art form and the expert finesse of Vogue's hyper-realistic painting with the can. Expect to see intricate representations of street life iconography such as train tracks, car culture, and graffiti artists in the midst of urban landscapes.

Vogue TDK is an influential figure in the Bay Area graffiti art scene. He was Mike "Dream" Francisco's partner in crime in the golden era of the '80s. In the '80s he pioneered the skinny cap technique to represent realistic subject matter, which has grown to be the foundation of his airbrush business "Vogue Graphics" in San Leandro. His exceptional technique has inspired younger graffiti writers to perfect their style and lettering, raising the bar for contemporary urban artists.
