These styles I think are very interesting, and so is the discussion about Chinese character (lettering) graffiti.

Germany, Ingolstadt: Aug 29-Sept 9, 2010: La Grande Schmierage
» LA GRANDE SCHMIERÂGE 2 - The exhibition «
Documentation of the international graffiti meeting
»La Grande Schmierâge« is an international graffiti meeting at Ingolstadt, more precisely: at the local Hall of Fame, the railway underpass at Unsernherrn.
On June 12th and 13th 2010, more than 60 writers created 250 meters of art. And naturally all those artworks will be painted over with new ones sooner or later. But those festival-days made formidable paintings appear, and so La Grande Schmierâge will be enjoyed again in a celebratory exhibition.
From August 19 - September 9, fotos of all the productions will be shown in the foyer of Sparkasse Ingolstadt - along with a movie produced by Gerfried Guggi (www.a38.at).
The Schmierâge clearly shows that the formula of 60 writers + 250 meters has proved itself. That is why this graffiti meeting has become a biannual festival. See you in 2012!
For an even faster reunion with artwork by Loomit, SatOne, Suiko, Wow123, Dems and many more we kindly invite you to the foyer of Sparkasse Ingolstadt on August 19th at 7pm.

NY, East Hampton: Aug 14 - Sept 26, 2010: Down by Law
From the international notoriety of Shepard Fairey, to the success of films like Exit through the Gift Shop and Radiant Child, to fashion that appropriates street iconography, graffiti and street art are massively influential in popular culture today. But while this work is enjoying a resurgence of popularity, many of the original artists remain unrecognized.
"Down By Law" showcases rarely seen works by the pioneers of the NYC based graffiti and underground art scene. On view are seminal pieces from the key artists of this genre—some of whom achieved international fame, others who remained relatively anonymous, and still others who died prematurely. These artists' "billboard masterpieces" and "moving murals" defined a generation and reshaped the way people have related to pop culture, public art, and urban aesthetics ever since.
Highlights include:
• Paintings by Coco 144, whose work in the early 1970s earned him the title "The Marcel Duchamp of graffiti subculture."
• Rarely seen canvases from the early 1980s by style master Dondi White, who by age 22 had had seven solo exhibitions and whose painting was in several European museum collections.
• Zephyr's animation sequence frames for Charlie Ahearn's iconic film, Wild Style.
• Original drawings from "Yo! MTV Raps", plus original logo designs for the Beastie Boys, Run-DMC, and the Cold Chillin' record label.
"Down By Law" will also include photos and contemporary art that gives context to this period: subway car photos by Henry Chalfant, rarely seen portraits of Jean-Michel Basquiat by Michael Halsband, plus new work from old graffiti masters, such as Mare 139's steel sculptures of two dimensional graffiti motifs, Sharp's sexualized mixed-media collages, and canvases by Blade, Lady Pink and Eric Haze.
"So much of contemporary art and culture is indebted to this genre," says Mare 139. "This survey helps chart the historical relevance of, and diffuses the prejudices about, what was once considered a marginalized outsider art form."
Exhibiting Artists include: Charlie Ahearn, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Blade, Henry Chalfant, Coco 144, Joe Conzo, Martha Cooper, Cope 2, Daze, Dr. Revolt, John Fekner, Cousin Frank aka Ghost, Michael Halsband, Keith Haring, Eric Haze, Keo, Eric Kroll, Lady Pink, Greg LaMarche, Chris Pape aka Freedom, Rammellzee, Carlos "Mare 139" Rodriguez, Anita Rosenberg, Sharp aka Aaron Goodstone, Jamel Shabazz, T-kid 170, Dondi White, and Zephyr. Additional artists to be announced!

China, Shanghai: December 18 - ?, 2010: Miss Van
MISS VAN
MISS VAN
MISS VAN
Kunsthalle
MISS VAN
MISS VAN

Austria, Vienna: June 25-Oct 10, 2010: From Basquiat to Séripop
Street and Studio
From Basquiat to Séripop
KUNSTHALLE wien, hall 1,
June 25th - October 10th, 2010
"... and the streets look really good to me, they look like art... I wanted to paint the town red, paint the town black.”
Jean-Michel Basquiat, Downtown 81 (1981)
“Where only a highway view is the outside and its monotone mobility relaxes me glancing at it, while inside I am in motion to clean up the biggest mess of multidimensional accidents on my paintings – and this is this Brooklyn studio.”
Rita Ackermann (2010)
With its major summer exhibition Street and Studio the Kunsthalle Wien brings the rough style of the street into the exhibition hall. Urbanity and mobility characterize a contemporary generation of artists who regard the metropolis both as their source of inspiration and means of expression: the US painter Jean-Michel Basquiat, whose work constitutes a landmark for various forms of painting and video art relating to urban or suburban cultures, provides the center of gravity for the show. From this starting-point, the presentation unfolds a network of positions that share a vitality induced by the street and urbanity and spans from the results of Basquiat’s productive collaboration with other artists such as Andy Warhol, Francesco Clemente, or Keith Haring to works by younger artists like Rita Ackermann or Séripop. Having never ceased to pervade pop culture since its emergence, this subversive pictorial language tells of the quest for identity, political responsibility, the commercialization of public space, and the fight for survival caused by social injustice.
With 32 artistic positions from 19 nations the show adresses both art historical key figures such as Blek le Rat, Jenny Holzer, or Sophie Calle and contemporary artists from Kader Attia and Brad Downey, Christian Eisenberger, Basim Magdy, and Ari Marcopoulos to Evan Roth and Rita Vitorelli, who are represented by new works created for the exhibition.
Curators: Cathérine Hug, Thomas Mießgang
Participating artists:
Rita Ackermann, Charlie Ahearn, Eric Andersen, Kader Attia, Banksy, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Dara Birnbaum, Blek le Rat, BLU, Sophie Calle, Francesco Clemente, Jane Dickson, Brad Downey, Christian Eisenberger, Futura, Dani Gal, Ingo Giezendanner (GRRRR), Shaun Gladwell, Keith Haring, Jenny Holzer, Mark Jenkins, Leopold Kessler, Lady Pink, Sol LeWitt, Basim Magdy, Ari Marcopoulos, miz JUSTICE, Ramm:ell:zee, Robin Rhode, Evan Roth, Séripop, Rita Vitorelli, Andy Warhol
