Above the Radar III

Original works by 25 urban artists from Los Angeles, New York, UK, Italy, and more will be on display in Washington, DC for a month-long exhibition that opens November 2, 2013 at The Fridge.

Above the Radar III is curated by Luna George, a Los Angeles based Urban Art Curator, and will bring together a hybrid of realism, street art, abstract art, graffuturism, 3-d  work, typography, illustration, collaborative artwork, surrealism, and traditional graffiti.

Above the Radar III encourages the viewer to examine intricate lines, brightly hued & vibrant colors that infuse the urban painting aesthetic.

Mark Bode

The exhibit includes:

Installation focusing on contrast and bursts of color painted by Col (New York) featuring hand-built wood pieces with abstract silhouettes of letters that work their way throughout the wall.

Original work by Mark Bode, protégé of Vaughn Bode, whose characters  continue the legacy of his father's Cheech Wizard and friends, all of which have become a quintessential part of graffiti.

3-dimensional work from Italy and Los Angeles, the collaborative painting of a maniacal character by Mice of Millions (LA) on top of an insanely intricate, hyper abstract Photo of Defer by PhotoJenInc, an explosion of color painted by Thanks One (LA), the lovely illustrative styles of UK's Inkie, explosive graffuturism by Defer and Kofie from LA, and original works by the many other exhibiting artists.

A gift shop with selected merchandise by exhibiting artists, as well as a special release of DC Graffiti snapbacks by Graffiti the City made exclusively for the DC exhibit will also be available during the exhibition.

Artists exhibiting work are: Cale, Cat Cult, Col, Dcypher, Defer, Dytch66, Eric Skotnes, Heaven, Hex, Inkie, Jesse Smith, Kofie, Kopye, Marcel "Sel" Blanco, Mark Bode, Mice of Millions, Michael Pizarro, Peeta, Pyro, Ree, Robots Will Kill, Teck, Tewsr, Thanks, and Xist.

With so many sought-after and celebrated artists showing in this international exhibition, collectors should seek previews. For an online catalog for the exhibition, images, bios of exhibiting artists or questions, please contact Luna George at lunacrewest@gmail.com

Opening October 17, 2013, the Coral Gables Museum will present Concrete Paradise: Miami Marine Stadium, an original exhibition devoted to Miami Marine Stadium’s flashy past, its edgy present, and its spectacular proposed comeback as a world-class sports and performance venue. Curated by renowned author and architectural conservator, Rosa Lowinger, this interactive exhibit will bring the glory days of Miami’s most daringly modern structure back to life through stunning video footage, rare photos and keepsakes, original art installations, photo murals of the stadium’s infamous graffiti, and an antique hydroplane.

The exhibit will feature images of the extraordinary graffiti that constantly evolves on the walls of the stadium and works by contemporary artists who have been inspired by the building itself. These latter works-- which include sculpture, painting, video and photography-- demonstrate the profound influence the stadium and its environs have had on visual artists at a national level.

Throughout its run at the museum, a full schedule of special events, tours, and lectures will be offered to the general public, allowing visitors to learn more about one of Miami’s most fascinating historic landmarks.

Call 305-603-8067 or visit www.CoralGablesMuseum.org

Additional support for the exhibition is being provided by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the Friends of the Marine Stadium.

OR, Portland: Nov 7 - 30, 2013: Augustine Kofie / Jerry Joker Inscoe / Christopher Derek Bruno

Three The Hard Way:
Augustine Kofie / Jerry Joker Inscoe / Christopher Derek Bruno

Three-person exhibition curated by Sven Davis

Breeze Block Gallery Portland OR.
7 November – 30 November 2013 (opens First Thursday)

For the month of November, Breeze Block Gallery is very proud to present Three The Hard Way; a three-person exhibition featuring Augustine Kofie, Jerry Joker Inscoe and Christopher Derek Bruno.

All three artists come from a graffiti background, and are firmly established members of the pioneering Transcend graffiti collective. These highly versatile artists are equally known for their large-scale mural projects, as well as their own very individual voices in a gallery setting. Traditional letterforms are abstracted into geometric configurations within their work; and dimension, form and space are considered and explored within their dynamic compositions.

Their collective approach to art-making is steeped in academic discourse, and whilst retaining the vibrancy of their graffiti backgrounds, traditional art movements such as Futurism, Abstract Expressionism and Precisionism are also embraced by the visual vocabulary imbued within their work.

The exhibition title itself is a literal reference to the historical terminology Hard-Edge painting; which was first coined in the late fifties and used to describe intense and abrupt delineation of color within the burgeoning Geometric Abstraction and Op-art movements. Whilst these artists acknowledge and embrace movements of the past, they confidently stand outside of historical classification and have established themselves as a core group of protagonists defining a contemporary movement they have made their own.

Whilst the three artists have shown together previously in larger group exhibitions, Three The Hard Way is the first time that this trifecta has shown together in a collaborative environment.

For the month of November the three artists will take over both of Breeze Block’s gallery spaces for an installation.

CA, Oakland: Oct 12, 2013 Estria Battle - and all-day festival

PRISM: Urban Art and Culture Festival

The Estria Foundation will sponsor 2 weeks of cultural happenings and curated events for the community of Oakland and beyond.

September 28 – October 12, 2013

The Battle
www.estriabattle.org

October 12th will highlight the return of The Estria Battle, an all day arts event at the historic DeFremery Park (Lil’ Bobby Hutton Park). This is a free, family-friendly event with a focus on public art and environmental sustainability. Youth are invited to participate in a series of arts activities including the Blackbook Battle and the t-shirt Stencil Workshop. Attendees are also welcomed to enjoy a range of artistic performances and are encouraged to participate in generating energy by dancing on the “Pedal Powered Stage” which transforms human exuberance into pure energy.

In its sixth year the Estria Battle remains the premier graffiti art competition in the United States. Sixteen renowned artists from across the country will compete in what has become one of the nation’s most talked about spray art events. The panel of judges will be Doze Green, Risk and Codak.  Returning artists are 2011’s 1st and 2nd place winners, Vyal One from Los Angeles, and Doves from New York City. Besides several local Bay Area artists, other contestant artists will be travelling from Chicago, Austin, and Miami.

The Estria Battle encourages graffiti writers to visually articulate social justice issues by empowering communities with the spirit and beauty of public art. These events aim to elevate street art through community building, public education, and engagement.

How does the Estria battle work?

1.    Artists are invited to the competition based on skill level and their foundation in spray can art.

2.    Artists are given 5 hours to complete a piece based on a word that is revealed at the beginning of the competition.

3.    An 8 x 12 ft. canvas is assigned to each artist with a  limited amount of spray cans and colors which are distributed equally amongst competitors.

4.    After 5 hours, the piece (finished or unfinished) is judged by legendary graffiti writers, and the champion is announced at the end of the Battle.

1st Place winner will win 400 cans from Montana Cans.

The Life is Living Festival at Defremery Park presented by the Estria Foundation and Youth Speaks,

16th St & Adeline St., West, Oakland, CA 94607

All ages, free admission.

In addition to the Estria Battle this day long event includes the following:

Stencil Workshop:  A youth-focused interactive arts education activity where participants select positive images and spray paint them on t-shirts, creating an original design.

Blackbook Battle:  Youth ages 14-21 create a drawing based on the day’s theme. Mentor artists judge the competition and provide positive feedback and supportive critiques. The first 50 participants receive a free sketch “blackbook” to take home.

Youth Mural Battle:  A live painting and visual storytelling competition featuring prominent young visual arts organizations from the Bay Area, Southern California, and Arizona. Contestant teams use mixed media of acrylic paints, markers and spray paint to develop murals addressing a given topic. Winning canvases will be displayed at the Oakland Public Library’s “Teen Zones” where free urban arts workshops will be held for youth through March 2014.

The Yerba Buena Center for Arts will be hosting the the Dance Stage with music from Samba, East and West African dance traditions.

What appears as asemic writing peppering the urban landscape is an exercise in identity development. CODES presents the current works of ZORE + ISH. For over three decades, both artists have been developing their visual language in the public eye. Successful studio practices have evolved as both artists transpose their "street codes" into raw and new abstracts for a larger audience.
