Stolen sacred petroglyphs found - why rock vandalism matters

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2013/01/petroglyphs-stolen-from-eastern-sierra-site-recovered-.html

Petroglyphs (ancient drawings on the stones of mountains, caves, and deserts) are priceless to indigenous people around the world.

Some horrible people stole some Native American sacred drawings by cutting them out of a rockface.

(Some other jerks sometimes paint near or over them. Don't put up with that. Make a fuss if you see someone messing with the rocks.)

It's cultural eradication, the destruction of our collective human history, and it's unfixable.

Damaging or removing the petroglyphs in the US is a felony. First-time offenders can be imprisoned for up to one year and fined as much as $20,000. Second-time offenders can be fined up to $100,000 and imprisoned up to five years.

RIP LORD BIZR

It is with a heavy heart that I must announce the tragic news of the untimely passing of the founder of the LORDS crew in California, Lord Bizr.

Hugs and deepest sympathies for my LORDS fam and Salvador's friends and loved ones.

There will be more later, but for now, here's the news:

CA, San Francisco: Jan 19 - March 2: While We Were Away

941 Geary is pleased to present
While We Were Away

Curated by gallery director Tova Lobatz and composed entirely of artists Lobatz has become aware of while traveling, While We Were Away focuses on the intersection of the creation of art and the travels involved with it. Featuring work from Miss Van (France), Amanda Marie (US), How and Nosm (Germany), Poesia (US), Sten Lex (Italy), Scott Shannon (US), Vhils (Portugal), Jaybo Monk (France), Hebru Brantley (US), Julio Pardo (Spain), and Chanoir (Columbia), the exhibit will open Saturday, January 19th from 6-9pm and will run until March 2nd, 2013.

Preview the show

The contemporary art market has become increasingly borderless as artists across the globe gain recognition, and with it, opportunities to bring their work far from their own hometowns. This has changed not just the role and impact of art, but the individuals behind it who have the chance to incorporate a wider scope of influences into their artistic framework.

Frequent travel presents a new context to view the world in and a myriad of inspiration, but it also requires the sacrifice of consistency, and can stand in the way of personal relationships. It is all these complications that Lobatz has asked the artists for While We Were Away to give us a glimpse into.

The artists featured display the vast talent that can be seen in cities around the world today, from pioneering street art in Toulouse to photography in Barcelona. With an engaging installation of personal memorabilia collected from every participant, Lobatz asks viewers to reflect on how travel has shaped the process and perspective of each chosen artist, and seeks to establish a new precedence of candor in artist exhibitions.

How and Nosm (Raoul and Davide Perre) are identical twin brothers known for their large scale graffiti based murals that adorn city walls around the world. The red, black, and white-based imagery is instantly recognizable, and can be found in South America, Europe, Asia, or cities around the U.S.

Born in 1976, Poesia is a self-taught San Francisco Bay Area artist. During his early years as a graffiti writer at the turn of the nineties, he was recognized for his experimental Wildstyle pieces and continued on as one of the pioneering practitioners of what became known as Abstract Graffiti.

Chanoir (Alberto Vejarano) born, 1976 (Bogota, Colombia) graduated from the Fine Art of Paris at Jean-Michel Aberola studio in 2002, six years after getting into graffiti. The artist currently lives and works in Paris and his work has been shown in Paris, Barcelona, Bogota, Miami, San Juan, and Beijing

Toulouse native and current Barcelona resident, Miss Van started wall-painting in the streets at the age of 18, initiating the feminine movement in street art. She is now exhibiting all around the world from NY to LA, Europe (France, Switzerland, Germany, Spain, Italy, UK), and Asia.

Sten (born 1982, Rome) and Lex (born 1982, Taranto), are Italian street artists that are considered some of the pioneers of Stencil Graffiti. They began in the early 2000's, before any notable stencil culture had reached Italy, and now have work in major international cities such as London, Barcelona and New York.

Hebru Brantley, lives and works in his hometown of Chicago, Illinois. With an affinity for visual art that began in childhood and a degree in film, Brantley has been inspired by science fiction, comic heroes, Black Folk art and Japanese anime. A transition from graffiti to canvas has resulted in Brantley's use of a vast array of mediums, from found objects and spray paint to coffee and tea.

Vhils, born 1987, Portugal, is a graffiti/street artist named Alexandre Farto, living and working in London and Lisbon. Using a technique of deconstruction uniquely his own, which can call for hammers, jackhammers or even explosives, the artist brings immense portraits to walls and billboards that cannot be easily forgotten. Vhils has had solo shows in Lisbon, London, Paris and Shanghai.

An American painter and Stencilist, Amanda Marie Ploegsma has been living and painting in Colorado since 2001. She attended the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design and has exhibited extensively the US and Europe. Influenced by 'Golden Era' children's illustration, Amanda Marie brings a playful and charming wit to her pieces, incorporating a variety of mediums, including acrylic & spray paint, wheat paste, hand-cut stencils and vintage sewing patterns.

Julio Pardo, born 1982, is a Barcelona- based photographer. Pardo's work allows a glimpse into the wild abandon of a youth spent travelling. Infused with haphazard beauty and a raw freedom, Pardo has exhibited in LA, New York and Barcelona and his 'zines have become a favorite among the fashion set.

Raised in Warwick, NY, Scott Shannon is a working artist in Miami, Florida. Shannon's first solo exhibiton was in March of 2010 at Spinello Gallery (Miami) and since then the artist has gained recognition for his detailed work, drawing on dark inspiration to complete drawings done entirely in crayola crayon.

Jaybo Monk left his home in the south of France at a very young age and moved to Kreutzberg, Berlin in the early Eighties. He became a graffiti writer, street actor and hip-hop musician. Since then, he has been exploring the creative world in every direction, founding a street wear company as well as a culture magazine, before embracing the canvas. Jaybo is a member of the Agents of Change with Kofie, Derm, Remi Rough and many more.

UK, London: Feb 7 - Mar 28, 2013: José Parlá - Broken Language

JOSÉ PARLÁ: BROKEN LANGUAGE

OPENING FEBRUARY 7th, 6-8PM up through March 28th, 2013

Haunch of Venison presents its first solo exhibition of New York-based artist José Parlá. Born in Miami of Cuban parents, artist José Parlá’s vibrant works explore the multilayered histories of cities and urban environments; his paintings and site-specific installations are created both in his large carriage house studio and outside throughout city surfaces. His expressive painting style and layers of ephemera and found objects combined with calligraphic abstraction have a unique lyrical feel to them. This exhibition presents new paintings, works on paper, photographs and sculptures throughout our three gallery spaces.

Parla’s work acts as a record of his journeys through streets that he navigates, using a map of one city to direct you through another. He documents his city walks through photographs as well as at times collecting detritus from the streets, once back in the studio they are used to build the composition of each painting.

Language and writing are key themes within Parlá’s work. He often incorporates layers of text from street posters he collects while traveling. His own stylized calligraphy is worked into and on the surface of each painting, and although it is always partially obscured and indecipherable, it is a personal narrative of his experiences and a record of stories he discovers on his various journeys.

Parla’s paintings are made in reaction to the urban environment; they are impressions of what we are surrounded by, a response to the energy that courses through every city. Parla brings beauty to ruggedness and decay, and a language of his very own to what he sees and feels around him.

José Parlá summarizes the work in the exhibition Broken Language:

For most of my life I have experienced being in transition and migration. This feeling allows me to bring the broken languages of the global community and its conditions into the gallery. My work is an empire of fragmented cacophonies, observed performances, palimpsestic musical gestures, and topographical compositions governing the essence of the cities I’ve traveled through.

José Parlá has exhibited internationally, including major shows in London, New York, Paris and Havana. In 2012 he exhibited at the 11th Havana Biennial, Cuba, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, New York, and the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. José along with friend and collaborator, artist JR, have been selected for an upcoming screening of their project: Wrinkles of the City, Havana, Cuba at The Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) in London. José's work was also recently added to the collection of the British Museum and he participated in a panel discussion entitled: Writers and Writers: Narrative on the Page and in the Street at MoMA.

NYC: Benefit shows through Feb 24, 2013: Michael Alan

Michael Alan benefit

NOoSPHERE Arts, Artforprogress, Amber De Vos, Mike Kronenberg, D'stroy And Rebuild, Joseph Meloy, Moody and many more invite you to a be a part of a positive cause.

The goal of the exhibition/ Artist in residence is to generate financial help for the Alan who has been struggling physically with 2 major injuries in the last year from a close to deadly car accident. Sales on works and donations from friends, family and all attending will be the starting point to help get Alan moving on and out of some hard troubles, and get him the help he needs.

It's been an uphill battle after unsuccessful spinal surgery, dealing with permanent nerve damage and a serious brain injury that happened in June this year. This benefit will hopefully allow some relief for Alan by raising money towards his outrageous medical bills and getting better help.

We hope to see you in January, 2013 to help start a better year for the New York-born and raised, wild child artist Michael Alan. This show is made possible by the help of NOoSPHERE Arts, a fun non-profit artist space in the Lower East Side.

This show will run through Feb 24th, changing every other night, as the artist resides there at night drawing his heart out marathon style with the inner mantra of Get Strong, Get Better! Keep coming back to see new work and the progress of recovery. The back room acts as a room of recovery through art, and a change of energy as the new year is upon us. its is part of the 2-year anniversary show of Nosphere arts, in the main room.

Graffiti quality mapping in New York City - Gothamist

Hilarious yet interesting info thanks to Jake: http://gothamist.com/2013/01/04/interactive_map_graffiti_complaints.php

In general, mapping graffiti walls can bring the buff along with the tourists, competitors and police, but in big cities like NYC where every inch is photographed, mapping mass photo data is perhaps less harmful, because lots of people know where it is already.

Think twice about geolocating your secret and chillest spots though. The person you get arrested might be yourself. Check your camera phone settings to make sure it's not recording location when you don't want it to.
