Delays, unavoidable

My schedule this month has been jammed up by work and family stuff, so I'm sorry to those waiting for blog postings. I'll get to them as soon as I can. The February issue of Art Crimes will probably be a few days late as well, but not to worry, it's coming.

Thanks for your attention and support.

Continual DNA

{7 years of work}

Yes Gallery 147 India Street, Brooklyn NY

Opening Friday Jan 20th 2011 7pm-11pm

Yes Gallery is proud to present over 40 works, a time-capsule exhibition.

There is a line that begins in Alan's work that flows from piece to piece and jumps, leaps and changes depending on the surface and combination he strikes with the material. The continuous line and flow morphs, grows and builds elaborate worlds from anatomy to movement. The root of anatomy (the figure) is DNA, the double helix, and the interpolation of DNA in Alan's worlds reforms and recreates itself. The variety of forms are limitless from combinations of flesh and skeleton, movement and print, collage and paint.

The work in Continual DNA streams form 2003-2011. The Exhibit will run through Friday Jan 21st- Feb 17th

Call for artists: Deadline February 1, 2011: Reuse & Resist!

REUSE PROJECT 4: REUSE & RESIST! Open Call For Art!!

REUSE PROJECT 4: REUSE & RESIST! Open Call For Art until Feb. 1st! www.reuseandresist.tk
What is the ReUse Project? Every year, for the past 4 years, INSPIRE Collective has made a call for art, taken a centralized public building, and installed as much artwork inside & outside as possible, then we open the doors to the public!
Want to get involved this time around? Just keep reading…

There is a better way, no matter what they say! Present-day cities, the world over, have massive percentages of un-used & generally neglected public space. By itself, this fact quickly becomes its own negative social issue & it isn’t a phenomenon, it’s a disgusting norm of all industrialized cities at this point. WE MUST REUSE AND RESIST!!
But how?! Many social issues could be already solved by ReUsing & re-thinking public space. This year, let’s stop talking about it and started getting things done!

INSPIRE Collective would like to extend this call for art around the world, so if you know folks who would like to get involved…We extend the invitation to all creators to participate in ReUse

Project 4: REUSE AND RESIST!

If you’re a conscious artist living on this planet and you can creatively relate to the ideas of ReThinking and ReUsing, then this exhibition is for you! Help us to make a positive social statement here in the Middle East & sustainable, independent artists will help to make this necessary statement world-wide. Open call for art ends February 1st.
For participation inquiries, entry submissions, call for art info, etc., please visit:
www.reuseandresist.tk
Also, for INSPIRE Collective past events and more: www.inspirecollectiveevents.tk

Nyt billedshow fra L:Ron:Harald

Gadens grafiske galskab galopperer derudad i et hæsblæsende tempo i Graffitigalleriet.

Fernisering fredag den 10. december
2010 fra kl. 17 – 21.

Udstillingen har åbent i perioden
10. december 2010 – 13. januar 2011.

CA San Francisco: January 8, 2011: Nothing to Say

Nothing to Say

Guerrero Gallery is pleased to announce “Nothing To Say”, a group exhibition featuring works by over thirty artists. The title of the show is a concept/word-play on the idea that an artist’s piece should be able to stand alone, speaking for itself. This exhibition provides both a visual and literal dialog between viewers and works, with each of the artists being individuals who naturally utilize text within their works.

Featured artist Caleb Neelon led a project earlier this year with kids at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts called Signs & Symbols, where signs inspired by a specific theme were created together. He’s currently working with kids from the Chelsea Club to hand-paint wooden signs with them about the kindest and meanest things they’ve said or have had said to them. Like with any kids project, the outcome is a gamble, and Neelon likes that.

TWINKLES by Miss Van
Miss Van finally reaches China with a new series of works. Following her exhibitions in Los Angeles, Mexico, Paris, and New York, Miss Van is taking a short break from her travels to show off her works in Shanghai. Thanks to her past year exhibitions in Barcelona, Los Angeles, San Diego, Mexico, London or Copenhagen, she has found many new sources of inspiration. Not only has she let herself be influenced by the contemporary artists with whom she has shared many privileged moments, but she has also borrowed the techniques and subtle lighting effects of past master artists, focusing her work more on the quality of her painting and less on self-asserting herself as is the tradition in street art. With this new series she has undergone a beautiful evolution towards a more mature and refined style of painting, but without ever losing touch with her street art origins.

CA San Francisco: Jan. 8-Feb. 5, 2011: Dan Witz

Dan Witz

[Dan Witz is one of NYC's original street artists and has always been one of the best. Don't miss this! - Susan]

White Walls
835 Larkin St.
San Francisco, CA 94109

Opening Reception - Saturday, January 8, 2011 7-11 PM

White Walls is pleased to present What The %$#@? (WTF), an exhibition by prolific Brooklyn-based artist, Dan Witz. The WTF exhibition will be showcasing the artist’s Dark Doings series, both inside the gallery as well as on the streets of San Francisco. Witz is known for using his mastery of the visual deception of trompe-l'oeil and photorealistic painting techniques to create conceptual visual pranks, producing a definitive and unparalleled street art practice. The artist’s debut San Francisco solo show will be comprised of approximately 30 mixed and digital media works in custom framing hand-created by the artist. The opening reception for What The %$#@? (WTF) will be held at White Walls on January 08, 2011 from 7-11 PM. The exhibit will be on display through February 05, 2011 and is free and open to the public.

Dan Witz’s integrity in expressing beauty through subversion and an enduring interest in realism has sustained the artist a copious 30-year career. Known for his hyper-realistic paintings, Witz challenges himself to keep representational painting relevant in the postmodern era and digital age. This challenge commands that the artist must continually grow and experiment in his art practice which has contributed to him being cited as one of the most progressive and influential painters of our time. Witz’s paintings are meticulous studies of light and it is through these subtleties of light that a sense of spatial dimension takes form. The presence of light becomes more delicate as it illuminates Witz’s subjects of quiet nightscapes and interiors and in stark contrast to his scenes of ominous mosh pits and animal frenzies. The artist’s career as a classical painter has risen while simultaneously championing an original take on street art. His street pieces surpass mere visual messages; rather they are witty puns and conceptual pranks that he integrates into urban environments. A master of the visual deception of trompe-l'oeil, Witz ironically provokes his viewers by placing shockingly unnoticeable art on city walls.

I’m trying to exploit our collective tendency towards sleepwalking by inserting outrageous things right out there in plain view that are also practically invisible. My goal is to make obvious in your face art that 99% of the people who walk by won’t notice. Eventually when they stumble upon one or find out about it I’m hoping they’ll start wondering what else they’ve been missing.

The What The %$#@? (WTF) series is named for the universal reactions it often inspires within the viewer. For this street art project, Witz is installing his Dark Doings pieces on walls beside highway ramps and interchanges--bottleneck locations where traffic backs up and a captive audience develops as cars pass by at low speeds. Dark Doings is made up of digital photo prints with extensive over-painting mounted on plastic and then framed. For each piece that Witz will be showing within the gallery, a corresponding piece will be put up somewhere in the Bay Area. The artworks come in an edition of 6:3 for the street and 3 for other distribution. The street versions are unsigned, but marked with NFFS*. The asterisk indicates (on the back of the piece) *NOT FOR FUCKING SALE.

Dan Witz is an artist living and working in Brooklyn, NY and has been active as both a street and realist artist since the late 1970’s. He received his BFA from Cooper Union (1981) was awarded a National Endowment of the Arts grant (1983) as well as a fellowships from the New York Foundation of the Arts (1992 and 2000). Witz has shown nationally with Jonathan LeVine Gallery, Carmichael Gallery, DFN Gallery and internationally with Stolen Space Gallery and Addict Galley. The artist has been featured in several notable publications such as New York Magazine, Public Art Review, The New York Times, The Daily News, Newsday, The New Yorker, Harpers, and Adbusters.

His first book, The Birds of Manhattan was published by Skinny Books in 1983.

His second book, In Plain View, as well as a calendar, Hummingbirds, 2011, were released in 2010 by Gingko Press.

Book: Rockin' it Suckers: New York City's Most Wanted Graffiti Vandals

Rockin' it Suckers: New York City's Most Wanted Graffiti Vandals (Dokument Press)
By: Alain Maridueña, Cousin Frank

The inside story of the crew that has kept graffiti alive in New York City for the past 20 years.

Some call it art others vandalism. For the members of the infamous RIS crew the label doesn't matter. ROCKIN' IT SUCKERS is the story of New York City's infamous RIS crew in their heyday. New York in the late 80s: A city tormented by crack and violent crime. At the same time the golden age of hip hop was in full bloom, and despite the violence some found room for creativity.

At this time a group of kids got together to taste the last of the city's painted subway trains, just in time to experience a new era in New York's graffiti history - The authorities decided to clean up the city and a zero-tolerance policy towards graffiti was instituted. While many of the city's graffiti writers quit, the RIS crew was determined to keep the trains colourful and decided to wage their own war with the city. As a result, they took over New York with style, and along the way influenced graffiti writers long way outside the five boroughs.

The crack down from the authorities didn't only trigger the RIS crew to write more, it also made them come up with faster techniques and develop their styles, all done with the crews' characteristic arrogance and humorous touch. Soon they became one of the world's most important and influential graffiti crews.

ROCKIN' IT SUCKERS feature never before seen images of graffiti by the leading figures in the crew as they share their thoughts on bombing, vandalizing and rocking the city.

Essays by: Duel, Fuzz One, Ghost, Ket, and Noxer.

Features the work of Bruz, Det, Ghost, JA One, Reas, Sane, Smith, Veefer and many more.

Book: Barry McGee: THR

Barry McGee: THR
By: Aaron Rose (Editor), Barry McGee (Author)

Barry McGee's art buzzes with an infectious street vitality that celebrates the rich pageant of city living, while lambasting its ills, overstimulations, frustrations, addictions. His early years as a graffiti artist, tagging on the streets of San Francisco under such monikers as Ray Fong, Twist and Twisto, still nourish his drive to inscribe the blank face of modern life with the personal and the handmade.

A part of the early 1990s art and graffiti boom associated with San Francisco's Mission School (others include Clare Rojas, Chris Johanson and Aaron Noble) and with the Beautiful Loser generation, McGee synthesizes a wide range of resources, including the Mexican muralists, anonymous street art and San Francisco Beat poetry, all of which are notably characterized by a sense of public address that McGee never neglects to convey in his own work.

His paintings, drawings and installations spill over with graphic energy and political anger, and direct exhortations to his audience to respond to the life around them. This hardcover artist's book takes the form of a visual collage, incorporating photographs, drawings, paintings and documentation of past and present installations. It is the definitive volume on a much-loved artist.

Barry McGee was born in San Francisco in 1968 and studied at the San Francisco Art Institute. He continues to live and work in that city. He has had solo exhibitions at Brandeis University's Rose Art Museum in Waltham, Massachusetts, Deitch Projects in New York and the Watari Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo.

Book: The Exchange

The Exchange (On the Run Books)
The Exchange (Author), Amber Gruenhaeuser (Contributor)

The Exchange project started in 2005, with just six participants from different areas of the United States. Today, the group includes thirty three members worldwide.
The participants of The Exchange pair up with other artists from the group, trading names, outlines and personal styles with one another. One artist draws a sketch in the other artist's name, scans it and sends it via email for the other artist to print out and execute.

This procedure is repeated as the participating artists' change, the idea being that all artists will have the opportunity to exchange artwork with everyone in the group at some point in time.

The process aims to draw attention to distinct lettering styles and trends. The goal for the individual artist is to become more versatile and open minded through attempts at graffiti styles out of their personal comfort zone. As they rise to the challenge and push through old limitations the artists learn new techniques, ideas and compositions that they can take back into their own work. A fun project with positive outcomes for all collaborating artists, it is no wonder that it has become a worldwide trend as unaffiliated but similar projects start to appear on the scene.

Book: Graffiti Tattoo: Kings On Skin

Graffiti Tattoo: Kings On Skin (From Here to Fame Publishing)
By: Alain "KET" Maridueña

Many graffiti writers in their quest to improve their artistic talent and earn an honest living have naturally gravitated towards other artistic endeavors. Since the 1970s these artists have made the leap to become muralists, fashion designers, art directors, and as of late, tattoo artists.
Similar to the graffiti movement in which the artists battle with one another in the public eye to be the best and most respected the same goes within the tattoo world. These spray paint technicians with their color mastery and wild styles are making a splash worldwide and changing the face of the tattoo business by adding their bold letters and thus creating a new visual language for the skin. A language filled with graffiti style burners and characters that are a departure from the standard tribal design and sailor styles.

Join us in celebrating the artwork of the best artists that have transitioned from the streets to the tattoo shops around the world including Jason Kundel, Mr. Went, Med, Ces, Chucho, and many more.

Book: Part One: The Death Squad

Part One: The Death Squad (On the Run)
By: Alain Maridueña

Part One entered the subway graffiti movement in 1974 just after the foundation for piecing had been laid down. He began doing the bubble and mechanical styles of the era, and by 1975-6 he truly came into his own.

From 1977 to 1980 few writers could compete with Part One and his TDS partners. These young men burned the subway lines from Brooklyn to the Bronx with their elaborately stylized letterforms and innovative color schemes. At the time Part One's aliases Fudge 357 and Worm 2 were seen on the trains in great abundance.

Today, Part One continues to burn and is considered an original New York City style master. The ON THE RUN book, Part One The Death Squad, is one of great historical importance. Part One of The Death Squad Fame and his crew have remained somewhat under the radar in regards to media recognition, even though they are considered one of the most prolific and influential style crews in the history of graffiti.

The fact that TDS was neglected is quite ironic considering the fact that some of the biggest names in writing were affiliated with it. @149th Street New York City Cyber Bench. This book sets the record straight giving Part One of TDS credit where credit is due. It is the first publication dealing exclusively with his impact on writing culture, with stories from the early days in 1974 until now, tracing his development as a writer and an artist over the years.

With exclusive material and unpublished archives, including sketches, pieces, trains and bombings from the Part One and TDS vaults. Historical gems, finally given the treatment that they deserve. OTR s Part One The Death Squad, cements his rightful place in graffiti history, his story preserved for all to share. Like OTR's motto says, Know your history.

Part One is still very active today first and foremost as a graffiti writer, but in other areas of art and illustration as well. It is interesting to see how his work has evolved since his train writing days. To get the full story behind this lesser-known but no less significant legend be sure to check out the book.

Book: Smash 137: Smash Proof

Smash 137: Smash Proof (On the Run)
By: Amber Gruenhaeuser (Author), From Here to Fame Publishing (Editor)

An in-depth look at a style in flux, 'Smash 137 - smash proof' traces the various style excursions and developments of Smash 137 one of Europe's finest contemporary style writers as he chases the elusive perfect style. Never content with resting on his reputation or accepting in-vogue styles, Smash keeps busy mixing it up and pushing his forms to the limit.

He is renowned for executing complex transitions and ideas under the guise of a simple veneer. Don't be misled - behind the bubbly persona and swing of these so-called simple letter styles is a subtle but powerful punch. This is a work in progress full of interesting twists and turns.

Watch as Smash takes the art of writing to another level ... Smash 137 is an impressive talent, famed for his unique, super-fresh letter styles and his no frills approach. He gained street cred in his home town of Basel before his work was picked up by galleries worldwide. Today he travels the world painting large-scale commissions and attending graffiti jams. Muralsimo Morte: The Rebirth of Muralism in Contemporary Urban Art
By: Jens Besser
'Muralismo Morte' features some of the best international artists involved in this new underground art movement revealing the vibrancy of new muralism as it rises from the shadows or urban spaces in Metropolises worldwide.
Art interventions in urban spaces, also known as street art, have enjoyed growing popularity. 'Muralismo Morte' delves deeper into the world of contemporary urban muralism, featuring the large-scale murals that grace the streets, abandoned buildings, backyards and building facades of cities everywhere. The contrast is stark, from much celebrated pieces in prominent places to those hidden in anonymous, decayed ruins that never see the light of day.

Urban art activist Jens Besser uncovers these urban treasures offering special insights into this emerging scene that is coloring our urban spaces. There is an incredible diversity in the work of these new muralists both in style and application; with artists expressing the abstract, the surreal and the realistic mixed with moods of exhilaration and melancholy. All murals interact playfully with the unique charm of the environment in which they were made adding to the sublime beauty of the pieces.

Book: Ghost: RIS Crew

Ghost: RIS Crew (On the Run Books)
By: Alain KET Maridueña

GHOST was one of the last kings of the New York City train writing era. He experimented with traditional letter styles until developing his own loose, funky and psychedelic letters that sprouted from his twisted drug seeped brain and his passion for bombing. When most writers see a train yard as an opportunity to paint a nice colorful piece, Ghost sees the yard as a place to bomb, to do hundreds of throw ups. He approaches his paintings with the same zest and casual grace as he does his throw-ups, with bold dripping explosions of vibrant colors and freaky cartoons.

With frequent trips to Europe his style has inspired the new wave of Scandinavian-loose-bombing-style pieces. Today, he exhibits his artwork in galleries worldwide and does collaborations with urban culture brands. Despite this Ghost remains an enigma, he isn't social, and he does not want to be your friend. But his artwork like his bombing is something fantastic that deserves attention, for this he is overdue.

Book: Calligraffiti: The Graphic Art of Niels Shoe Meulman

Calligraffiti: The Graphic Art of Niels Shoe Meulman
By: Niels 'Shoe' Meulman, Adam Eeuwens

'Calligraffiti - The Graphic Art of Niels "SHOE" Meulman' is an impressive publication that presents a large selection of typographic works by Niels Shoe Meulman arranged in a uniquely simplistic manner; every spread presents two interacting visuals on its opposing pages. This repeating duality makes this book much more than just a collection of the artist's best work; it unveils the basis of all graphic art.

The idea of universal harmony, sometimes described as yin and yang, is translated to the 21st century. Like 'black and white' or even 'less and more'. Throughout the book there will be comments written by Adam Eeuwens and the artist. The book includes an essay by Adam Eeuwens about the artist and the significance of his work.

Niels 'Shoe' Meulman is a contemporary Dutch calligrapher, typographer and designer who successfully made the transition from the street to high end design. His work can be described as classical freehand calligraphy combined with street edge and contemporary design aesthetic.

With firm roots in graffiti, Shoe is a member of Europe's infamous Crime Time Kings who ruled supreme in the 80s and 90s.Today, his design and typographic works are included in the permanent collections of MOMA San Francisco and the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. They can also be found wandering the streets, gracing a range of luxurious silk scarves - out on his 'Unruly' label - worn by fashionistas and Hip Hop heads alike.

Book: Trespass: A History Of Uncommissioned Urban Art

Trespass: A History Of Uncommissioned Urban Art
By: Carlo McCormick (Author), Marc Schiller (Author), Sara Schiller (Author), Ethel Seno (Editor)

Graffiti and unsanctioned art—from local origins to global phenomenon

In recent years street art has grown bolder, more ornate, more sophisticated and—in many cases—more acceptable. Yet unsanctioned public art remains the problem child of cultural expression, the last outlaw of visual disciplines. It has also become a global phenomenon of the 21st century.

Made in collaboration with featured artists, Trespass examines the rise and global reach of graffiti and urban art, tracing key figures, events and movements of self-expression in the city's social space, and the history of urban reclamation, protest, and illicit performance.

Trespass features key works by 150 artists, and connects four generations of visionary outlaws including Jean Tinguely, Spencer Tunick, Keith Haring, Os Gemeos, Jenny Holzer, Barry McGee, Gordon Matta-Clark, Shepard Fairey, Blu, Billboard Liberation Front, Guerrilla Girls and Banksy, among others. It also includes dozens of previously unpublished photographs of long-lost works and legendary, ephemeral urban artworks.

Also includes:

• Unpublished images of street art by Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat

• Unpublished photographs by Subway Art luminary Martha Cooper

• Unpublished photos from the personal archives of selected artists

• Incisive essays by Anne Pasternak (director of public arts fund Creative Time) and civil rights lawyer Tony Serra

Special feature: exclusive preface by Banksy

Book: San Francisco Street Art

San Francisco Street Art
By: Steve Rotman
San Francisco's vibrant street art scene exists in areas off the city's well-worn tourist paths. The alleyways and hidden side streets of the Haight, the Tenderloin, and especially the Mission district's Clarion Alley offer unexpected treats to visitors lucky enough to stumble upon them. For more than five years, photographer Steve Rotman has obsessively documented this scene as it evolved on walls, sidewalks, billboards, fences, doors, and other public spaces.
Culled from thousands of images, the result is a collection of work that attests to the artists' personal and stylistic diversity, from Mars1's robotic depictions of alternate universes which reflect the local counterculture spirit, to Neck Face's whimsically ghoulish creatures that serve as a testament to entrepreneurial hipsterdom, to Bigfoot's friendly green primates inspired by the area's rich graffiti culture.

San Francisco's charm as an international destination also causes foreign artists to contribute to the street dialogue-Brazilian duo Os Gemeos, Londoner D*Face and German painter Dome have all graced the city's walls with their unique points of view.

Book: Label 228: A Street Art Project

Label 228: A Street Art Project
By: Camden Noir
Label 228 is a gathering of street art executed on priority mail labels (Label 228, in official parlance) and displayed in public spaces. It’s a remarkably prevalent method of exposure featured by graffiti artists worldwide. These labels are free, portable, and quick and easy to exhibit, offering artists the chance to spend more time creating their work than if they were to paint and write directly on walls, vehicles, and public objects.
Camden Noir launched his Label 228 project by putting out a call to artists, asking them to send him their artwork or anything, for that matter, on priority mail labels. Within six months, he received over 500 labels from artists all over the world. At this point, he has over 1,500 labels from over 600 artists. This is a collection of the best of those labels, in a beautiful, full-color book.

The artists featured in Label 228 include Mecro, Downtimer, Mat Curran, Daniel Fleres, Zoso, Aaron Kraten, Lightsleepers, David Flores, Matt Linares, Kegr, Josh Taylor, Robots Will Kill!, Nano, Dolla, and many more.

Book: Broken Windows: Graffiti NYC

Broken Windows: Graffiti NYC
By: James T. Murray, Karla L. Murray

Broken Windows - Graffiti NYC documents the flowering of the graffiti movement of the post-train era, and this newly revised 2010 edition has been completely redesigned with 70 more pages and many new photographs. In the 1980s graffiti was pushed out of the subways as the trains were cleaned once and for all.

In the 1990s, much of the graffiti action in New York migrated to the city's walls, enabling the 'writers' to execute more refined and concept-driven large-scale pieces. By the end of decade, this new medium was being used to great effect. Photographers James & Karla Murray took great pains to faithfully capture an unprecedented rebirth of the movement, documenting the most significant murals created during 1996 - 2001.

Broken Windows contains insightful interviews, an extensive selection of women s' graffiti, and features the work of more than 180 artists from The United States, Germany, France, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Holland, Italy, and Norway.

Dan Witz: In Plain View: 30 Years of Artworks Illegal and Otherwise
By: Dan Witz

Dan Witz: In Plain View 30 Years of Artworks Illegal and Otherwise is the first and long overdue monograph on the work of Dan Witz.

In his 30-year career, Dan Witz has specialized in a smaller, more intimate kind of street art. For Witz, a sense of wonder and curiosity is the key, as well as the element of discovery.

Strongly influenced by the changing cultural landscape of the New York City streets where he developed his craft, Witz has traveled the path from dark to light and back again. His monograph is a study in both the man and his art, with chapters chronicling the transformation from a derelict Lower East Side to a shiny new Gotham. The book is beautifully illustrated in 250 color photographs and narrated through an interview with the Wooster Collective.

Graffiti New York
By: Eric Felisbret (Author), James Prigoff (Foreword), Luke Felisbret (Contributor)

Decades after the movement globalized, New York is still the mecca of graffiti culture. Painting there is a badge of honor, with graffiti artists from around the globe making pilgrimages to New York for that purpose. This is the city where it all began, yet few know the back story.

Graffiti New York fills that gap, detailing the concepts, aesthetics, ideals, and social structures that have served as a cultural blueprint for graffiti movements across the world. The book features approximately 1,000 images, complemented by texts by the authors and relevant players in the movement, as well as descriptive graphics and sidebars.

Ranging from the birth of simple signature tags to today’s vibrant murals, and covering the ups and downs of the movement, the culture’s value system, its social framework, the various forms of graffiti, and significant artists and crews, Graffiti New York is a major addition to Abrams' superb books on graffiti art.

Where-as graffiti usually draws one's mind to words and letters, tags and scrawls, this book is focussed more on the artistic side of the graffiti culture and not focussed on the words or tags at all-it's about the themework and charicatures/characters of the culture. The photography within the book is 40% NZ based and 60% international giving a great cross-section of both national and international talent/artists
