“Bricks & Sticks & Mortar” opens at Recoat on the 2nd of November, a joint show from internationally exhibited artists, Eko and Erms. With more than 20 years’ experience within the UK graffiti scene, this exhibition will be their first show together. Their shared history, respect for each other’s work and the similar themes that run through their pieces, brings them together for this important exhibition.
With deep roots in the classical graffiti tradition, the pair explore new graphical possibilities beyond the constraints of lettering alone. Drawing inspiration from their environments, their pieces have a dream-like feel, each exploring a unique graphic universe, with fairytale landscapes and unfamiliar constructions that hint at their internal worlds.
The show is a collection of brand new originals. The pair will be creating murals at Recoat, aswell as producing a collaborative limited edition risograph print and a limited edition zine that will be available for sale throughout the show.
Exhibition runs till the 2nd of Dec open 12-6pm Tues to Sun.
Erms Biographyhttp://www.ermsy.com/Erms, born 1978, England. His pseudonym “ERMS“ appears as an influential name in the contemporary graffiti and street-art movement.
With his canvas work based on the abstraction of classical graffiti ideas, he represents the missing link between modern graffiti and the recent street-art movement.
He discovered the world of graffiti art in 1990. It opened up a whole new world to him, coloured by hip hop and skateboard culture. Since then, he’s travelled and collaborated with many artists from the scene worldwide, from South America, to Asia, Australia and beyond. The strength of his artwork and his knowledge of cultures and lifestyles, are precious contributions to a wide range of projects. His artwork has been featured in a range of gallery shows, high profile art auctions, books and magazines worldwide. He has recently completed commercial projects for Ecko Unlimited, Converse and TRAINERSPOTTER amongst others.
Erms is currently working as an artist and graphic designer based in Paris, France.
Eko BiographyEko spent his formative years painting in the late 80's Graffiti scene; learnt his craft in the now infamous Hull warehouses era, relocating to Bristol in the 90's and leaving his inimitable mark upon the city.
As his focus broadened to encompass commissions from the worlds of fashion and music, Eco has worked continuously and notably with EH? and Lex Records, for artists such as Dangermouse and MF DOOM.
Alongside commercial success Eko maintains his long-established relationship with walls and, most recently with his cohorts of WSSK, continuing the grand tradition of urban, exhibition and installation art.
Their work has been published in frequent volumes for Thames & Hudson and Die Gestalten Verlag, injecting no small amount of irony and a little self-deprecation into the confines of traditional street art.
