CA, Oakland: January 5-31, 2013: Ricky Watts

Oakland, December 5, 2012 — ZeroFriends Gallery is pleased to announce Destination Unknown, the anticipated solo show of new works by Ricky Watts, premier illustrator, fine artist and member of ZeroFriends collective.

A departure from his known works on canvas of fluid shapes in symmetric vibrant hues, and murals on large-scale public walls, Destination Unknown features Watts’ most meticulous work to date: detailed illustrations exploring the artist’s journey through imagination that manifest a world of endless possibilities. This exhibition draws from Watts’ real-life objects, events, and photographs, while conceptually merges both fact and fictional elements into mellifluent scenes of splendor and intrigue. Grand architectural schemes backdrop mise-en-scenes, where precious life wonders meet disparate happenstance.

Watts’ newest works demonstrate true dedication to his craft, producing a collection that emphasizes his technical approach to illustration and precise attention to detail. Watts created eight pieces over seven months, in a departure from his habitual pattern. He is a veteran of graffiti, giving way to an artistic process mandating you get in and out as quickly as possible. However, allowing himself time to treat each illustration a tour de force rather than the entire show itself the masterpiece, Destination Unknown yielded Watts less work than shows past, yet far superior in quality to anything he’s ever produced, he said. “Each piece has been a marathon—often taking weeks to complete—so the challenge to finish is exhausting, but crossing the finish line is very satisfying.”
Ricky Watts’ ability to translate opposing narratives through a warm pallet and tight composition is revealed in his depiction of children’s delight at play amid contrasting wreckage, and colorful balloons and bubbles floating freely over unstable dwellings and shipwrecks. All is a reminder an element of yin shares space with every existence of yang, that organic beauty and youthful innocence will forever counterbalance a world full of tragedy and misfortune. And from life’s pairings of opposite circumstances, stories await Watts’ aesthetic interpretation.

“I’m a positive and happy person, but I have this under lying obsession with unfortunate circumstances,” he says of themes reflecting inspiration. “Most often tragedies are man-made, which is significant to me cause I strongly feel we are our own worst enemies. The human race is superior, dominating everything else on the planet, yet we’re unable to be completely satisfied. We feel a need to continue to develop technology ‘for the good of mankind.’ Sadly, I feel that will ultimately lead to our own self-destruction.”

Watts move to technical illustration represents a new direction in his oeuvre. While surprisingly he isn’t formally trained, his experience with abstract work enables him to build on a process that breaks the big picture down into simple shapes and colors. Watts has been fascinated by illustration since childhood, yet through graffiti and fine art his drawings often failed to progress past the conceptual stage before being brought to life on a wall or canvas. With Destination Unknown, the end result is stunning, and a direct representation of Watts superior talent in all mediums.

New Book: Billboard Bandits

Billboard Bandits: Outlaw Artists in the Sky

A 208-page hardcover packed with photos and interviews, Billboard Bandits dives deep within graffiti and street art subcultures and their fascination with conquering the billboard.

The book's interviews include 18 top graffiti and street artists from the USA and UK, including Augor.MSK, the Billboard Liberation Front (BLF) and Ron English. They specialize in everything from integrating their pieces into the advertisement itself to adding their artwork to the blank billboard back. A few are "billboard liberators," manipulating the ads to convey their message (subvertising).

CA, San Francisco: Nov. 17, 2012-Jan. 5, 2013: APEX

941 Geary is pleased to present
Reflected
a collection of new works by renowned street artist Apex.

The exhibition is free and open to the public.

Consisting of two 10x6' and ten 6x6' latex and spray paint on canvas paintings, 12 framed sketches on transparencies and a large-scale wall mural, Reflected is the next step in the artist's evolving look into abstraction. With a focus on mirrored images, the exhibition will explore the beauty of symmetry in nature and in design.

The artist's sharp-edged compositions contain a visual interplay of organic and structural form, Influenced by architecture, graphic design and the Fibonacci sequence. The multilayered, intricately stylized letterforms appear in Rorschach-like arrangements, characterized by a flurry of self-contained energy. In two paintings, layers of color build upon each other in bright bursts, but for the majority of the work the artist will employ a monochromatic palette, incorporating earth tones into a body of work for the first time.

San Francisco-based artist APEX has quickly made a name for himself in the world of street art, in both the Bay Area and abroad. Having coined the term "Super Burner," his pieces are most commonly huge, multilayered productions, packed with patterns and a vivid array of colors. The relationship his pieces have to the built environment creates moments of intersection, and opens up complex fields of color, as if they have somehow transcended into their own form of architecture. The work is most certainly its own form of typography is pieces are careful explorations of abstract letterforms.

The Last Supper
Have Your Cake and Eat It Too

*An Artists' Pre-Apocalyptic Confessional*

Here's your chance to make that piece of artwork you've always wanted, but feared to, for dread of worldly persecution, imposed judgment or exile and an inevitable forlorn state of existential loathing from a self-imposed ego-implosion. WHO.WHAT.WHEN.WHERE.HOW.

This is a juried art exhibition and is open to all artists. We will consider all mediums: oil, acrylic, watercolor, video, film, mixed media, photography, sculpture, installation, ephemera, performance, illustration, and beyond! Get crazy. The finished piece should fall within the price range of $1 - $500.

HOW TO ENTER:

Send a detailed description of your proposed piece via email to: ashley@graeterartgallery.com To be considered you must include the following information:

Escaping Logik

New York, New York - October 25, 2012 – Escaping Logik is a solo exhibition presented at Fine Art in Space by Brooklyn-based artist, Anthony Pugh. The show opens with a reception on Friday, November 9th from 7:00 pm-10:00 pm. Anthony will be presenting acrylic painted works, as well as over 100 watercolor pieces. In conjunction with his new work, he is releasing a limited edition sketchbook entitled Escaping Logik.

The works collected for the show encompass numerous themes such as Anthony’s personal commentary on social interpretations of historical figures, graffiti stories, and urban/rural mythology – he has secretly listened to a fictional conversation between Malcolm X and Robert Johnson. Anthony runs towards a creative vindication: shaping and developing a narrative about an evolving Negroid sentinel character, who is on the brink of breaking free from the contradictions of his environment and from the struggle to maintain his identity. The paintings depict the possibility of freedom from the barriers of social isolation and the constant flux between black & white.

Logik was once an alias for the artist, but now it is a metaphor for an evolving personal mythology, which he resists but cannot deny. Escaping Logik is influenced by Anthony’s experience as a graffiti artist, his love of comic books, and his fine art education.

Anthony Pugh is a freelance illustrator, comic book artist, and a dedicated painter. Some of his clients include: DDBO, Phoenix New Times, Mecca Clothing, Kid Robot, Spike DDB, Pepsi Cola, 11211 Magazine, Vessel Drinkware, City Pages, and The Village Voice.

NYC: Nov 9-24, 2012: Photographers Eriberto and Estevan Oriol [date changed to 9th]

Carmichael Gallery is pleased to announce
Like Father, Like Son : NYC

a retrospective survey of works by renowned Los Angeles-based Chicano father and son photographers, Eriberto and Estevan Oriol. The exhibition debuted at Carmichael Gallery's Culver City space in the fall of 2011.

The New York edition of Like Father, Like Son : NYC will comprise fifteen limited edition black and white, color, silver gelatin and digital c-prints from each photographer, including works exhibited in Art in the Streets (April 17 - August 11, 2011) at The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA). The exhibition, which offers a dramatic taste of the urban California lifestyle, marks the first showing of the Oriols' work side by side on the US east coast.

There will be an opening reception for Like Father, Like Son : NYC on November 9 (new date), from 6 to 8pm at 303 Tenth Ave in Chelsea. Both Eriberto and Estevan Oriol will be in attendance. The exhibition will run through November 24, 2012.

Estevan Oriol

From hip-hop club bouncer to tour manager for Cypress Hill and House of Pain in the late 1980s and early 1990s to the internationally celebrated professional photographer, director and urban lifestyle entrepreneur he is recognized as today, Estevan Oriol's talent, fame and success only continue to grow.

1992 saw the beginning of what quickly grew to be an influential relationship with best friend, fellow Soul Assassin associate and now world-famous tattoo artist, Mister Cartoon. Together, they created the increasingly lucrative and high-profile Joker Brand Clothing, just one of Estevan's ventures in the clothing industry, which range from Not Guilty, produced with Everlast, and his solo line Scandalous to his eponymous line with Upper Playground.

In 1995, however, Eriberto gave his son a camera, and what began as a means of capturing life on tour led to a career that has snapped up images of everyone from gang members and graffiti artists to hip hop stars and Hollywood celebrities.

“Bricks & Sticks & Mortar” opens at Recoat on the 2nd of November, a joint show from internationally exhibited artists, Eko and Erms. With more than 20 years’ experience within the UK graffiti scene, this exhibition will be their first show together. Their shared history, respect for each other’s work and the similar themes that run through their pieces, brings them together for this important exhibition.

With deep roots in the classical graffiti tradition, the pair explore new graphical possibilities beyond the constraints of lettering alone. Drawing inspiration from their environments, their pieces have a dream-like feel, each exploring a unique graphic universe, with fairytale landscapes and unfamiliar constructions that hint at their internal worlds.

The show is a collection of brand new originals.  The pair will be creating murals at Recoat, aswell as producing a collaborative limited edition risograph print and a limited edition zine that will be available for sale throughout the show.

Exhibition runs till the 2nd of Dec open 12-6pm Tues to Sun.

Erms Biography

http://www.ermsy.com/

Erms, born 1978, England. His pseudonym “ERMS“ appears as an influential name in the contemporary graffiti and street-art movement.

With his canvas work based on the abstraction of classical graffiti ideas, he represents the missing link between modern graffiti and the recent street-art movement.

He discovered the world of graffiti art in 1990. It opened up a whole new world to him, coloured by hip hop and skateboard culture. Since then, he’s travelled and collaborated with many artists from the scene worldwide, from South America, to Asia, Australia and beyond. The strength of his artwork and his knowledge of cultures and lifestyles, are precious contributions to a wide range of projects. His artwork has been featured in a range of gallery shows, high profile art auctions, books and magazines worldwide. He has recently completed commercial projects for Ecko Unlimited, Converse and TRAINERSPOTTER amongst others.

Erms is currently working as an artist and graphic designer based in Paris, France.

Eko Biography

Eko spent his formative years painting in the late 80's Graffiti scene; learnt his craft in the now infamous Hull warehouses era, relocating to Bristol in the 90's and leaving his inimitable mark upon the city.

As his focus broadened to encompass commissions from the worlds of fashion and music, Eco has worked continuously and notably with EH? and Lex Records, for artists such as Dangermouse and MF DOOM.

Alongside commercial success Eko maintains his long-established relationship with walls and, most recently with his cohorts of WSSK, continuing the grand tradition of urban, exhibition and installation art.

Their work has been published in frequent volumes for Thames & Hudson and Die Gestalten Verlag, injecting no small amount of irony and a little self-deprecation into the confines of traditional street art.

MA, Boston: Nov 10 - Dec 3, 2012: Fear No Art 4

FEAR NO ART 4

Thanks to revolutionary big-wigs like Banksy, Lee Quinones, and Swoon, Street Art is becoming more house-hold then forbidden fruit, more revered than reprimanded, and more accepted than door-slammed. But of course, even if your parents know who the Os Gemeos twins are, thanks to a rather grandiose public art-making exhibition this past August, that doesn’t make street art any more palatable or easily categorized. Indeed: the Street Art enigma has become ever-more abstract and hard to pin down: are these artists graphic designers or law-breakers? Are these people grocery-shopping regulars behind their elusive pseudonyms, or wild, shark-punching booze-hounds? And, most importantly: why are they all gathered in one room together?

Boston’s Fourth Wall Project will be the petri dish for FEAR NO ART 4, an exhibit showcasing the newest generation of street artists pulsating from both sides of the US including, but not limited to: the fantasmic master-mind behind tokidoki, the brazen SLICK of dissizit, the architecturally obscure Augustine Kofie, the vibrant hip-hop cavalier TooFly, Caleb Neelon (was here), and madman muralist Raul Gonzalez, Simone Legno, Shane Jessup, Kenji Nakayama, Sket-One, Jesse Hernandez, Cern-One, Gigi-Bio, Don-Rimx, Problak, Pac23. All of these about-to-break-free-artists have been gathered by the enigmatic Marka27, a graphic design extraordinaire, creator of minigods, and a prolific artist in his own right, is undeniably the link chaining this unique collective together. Undoubtedly, this amalgamation of talent is sure to create some sort of combustion, and you’re officially invited to light the first match.

Join us for the opening of FEAR NO ART 4 at the Fourth Wall Project on November 10th and see what street freak flags will be flying on both US coasts to come.

UK writer gets 16 months' sentence

http://blogs.artinfo.com/artintheair/2012/10/18/artist-employed-by-london-olympics-convicted-of-graffiti-vandalism/

Noir's website

Jail time for painting is wrong. Let's hope he can get out early and go back to his work with the kids who need him.

"Glynn Judd, a graffiti artist who worked on the backdrops of the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympics, has pleaded guilty to 15 counts of graffiti vandalism at Blackfriars Crown Court in central London. According to the Evening Standard, the 40-year-old artist was sentenced to 16 months in prison for spray painting subway trains between 2006 and 2011 with the tag Noir, causing an estimated £32,000 ($52,000) in damage to city property."

3. VISIT OUR STORE
http://wearelegionthedocumentary-shop.myshopify.com/

Independent films wedged between a largely corporatized national news media and a blockbuster-driven SOPA-supporting Hollywood often face an uphill battle making their budget back.  Due to a huge number of requests for the incredible Michael Byzewski designed poster from the film, we've decided to do a print run and sell some here to help with the costs.
We are also very excited to start offering preorders on the DVD and BluRay.  The DVD and BluRay will be available after our theatrical run on November 23rd and in addition to the full film (with 5.1 surround sound) the DVD and BluRay will include an additional 22 minutes of material.  The extras will have extended in depth interviews with some of our film's subjects, some prominent hackers not featured in the documentary, more analysis and thoughts on Wikileaks, further discussion about Anonymous member-turned-FBI informant Sabu, and thoughts from tech author and speaker Richard Thieme on how technology is re-wiring our brains and why we need to nurture our "dark side."
Proceeds from sales are going to the finishing, print costs, theater costs and further distribution of We Are Legion:  The Story of the Hacktivists.  In the spirit of the film should we make back our costs, we are donating ten percent of profits to the Electronic Frontier Foundation.  We are also donating another portion to Free Anons and to other human rights, or technology groups we think are behaving well defending human rights or freedom of speech in a digital age and we will continue to make disruptive documentaries about compelling stories and people we think are re-shaping our world.  Thank you for supporting independent film!
