Blog growing pains, sorry.

Sorry for the abrupt visual changes and formatting issues here on the Art Crimes blog. I migrated to the hosted Blogger in January and am still having some transitional tool issues.

Blogger is great because it's free and has lots of uptime, but the template editor and post editors need some work. If you have problems reading or printing this new format, please complain so I can keep working on that.

There is a problem with black text on black background in the search results that I won't be able to fix, but it's in a secondary navigation area, not the content, so I might just learn to live with it.

Thanks for reading,

Susan

NY, Manhasset: July 1-27, 2010: SHOE - Calligraffiti

Don't miss this rare opportunity to meet one of the modern Dutch masters of style.

NIELS SHOE MEULMAN

Calligraffiti: Letters of Independence
Thursday, July 1 – Tuesday July 27, 2010

Opening reception for the artist: Thursday, July 1, from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m.

The Salamatina Gallery is pleased to host an unprecedented installation, Calligraffiti: Letters of Independence, by the cutting-edge artist Niels Shoe Meulman. This unique project will open on the evening of Thursday, July 1st with a live Calligraffiti performance.

During his opening-night performance, Meulman will literally rewrite the 1776 Declaration of Independence on site at the Salamatina Gallery. His Re-Declaration, which will take place over several days, will highlight all 1,337 of the historic words, resulting in 262 U.S. letter-sized pieces, executed in ink on paper. Showcasing the artistʼs fluid and hypnotic style, these “Letters” will remain on view and for sale until July 27.

According to the author Adam Eeuwens: “Calligraffiti is a combination of traditional calligraphy coupled with the speed of modern-day graffiti. It is an amalgam of an ancient, refined art form, fused with the raw force of rebellious street art. It combines the rhythm and regularity of Frakturʼs precise stroke with the perfect accidents of the vertical drip and splatter of the horizontal drop, creating a synthesis of opposites.” Meulman, one of the pioneers of this revolutionary art form, will break new ground by reinterpreting a document of the length and significance of the Declaration of Independence. The document has special meaning for the Amsterdam-based artist, who embraces elements of American culture as a whole, whether it be Pop Art, advertising, product packaging, skateboarding, graffiti or car design.

“My work is dedicated to the art of writing,” Meulman explains. “I am inspired by ancient Japanese brush characters, Arabic pictorial script, illuminated medieval books and flourish-filled quill writing, of which the Declaration of Independence is one of the most beautiful and eloquent examples. My interest in this document runs deeper than its being an emblem of U.S. courage and democracy. Its powerful words set forth human rights which are universal and resonate with my own personal beliefs, especially with regards to taking risks in order to exercise oneʼs freedom of expression.”

Niels Meulman (b. Amsterdam, 1967) is an internationally recognized artist, graphic designer, and art director. Meulman began tagging under the pseudonym Shoe in 1979 and became a graffiti legend by the time he was 18. In the 1980ʼs, he met New York artists like Dondi, Rammellzee, Haze, Quik and Keith Haring. He then formed the Crime Time Kings with Bando from Paris and Mode2 from London. Together, these seminal groups gave a distinctive style to graffiti in Europe. In the 1990ʼs, he furthered his technique by apprenticing under the Dutch graphic design master, Anthon Beeke. Meulman ran his own design company, Caulfield & Tensing, and was a partner in the advertising agency Unruly, which he later turned into a brand for silk scarves.

Calligraffiti was first shown in a large solo exhibition in Amsterdam in 2007. Since then, it has become a revered art form and Meulmanʼs pieces (signed NSM) have been exhibited in over a dozen international exhibitions. The artistʼs designs and works are also in the permanent collections of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, as well as part of numerous private collections. In 2010, the book Calligraffiti -The Graphic Art of Niels Shoe Meulman was co-written by Adam Eeuwens and published by From Here to Fame Publishing, Berlin.

Salamatina Gallery is the first venue in the United States to host the Calligraffiti tour - a series of lectures, exhibitions, book signings and site-specific Calligraffiti events around the world, during which books, markers, T-shirts, silk scarves and art by Meulman are for sale. This tour will include other events in Los Angeles, Philadelphia, San Francisco and New York.

France, Paris: June 28, 2010: Wasted Talent

NY, New York: July 8-29, 2010: Michael Alan

Harmonious Opposites
A Drawing/Video/Performance Exhibition
@ GASSER GRUNERT
524 West 19th Street, between 10th and 11th
New York, NY 10011
(646) 944-6197

opening Thursday July 8th 6pm-8pm

Tanja Grunert and Klemens Gasser are pleased to present a drawing/video/performance exhibition by Michael Alan.

Michael Alan creates moments in time that overlap drawing, painting, sculpture, music and video. They inspire live performance and installation happenings. All of his work begins with drawings. These drawings serve as the foundation for his installations, performances, and videos. Working with a team of performers, Alan assembles living installations where all these creative elements merge.

Harmonious Opposites is about the beauty of balance in a state of extreme cultural and artistic change. It includes large and small works on paper and wood panel, a video installation, and on the closing night, Thursday July 29th, a 6 hour Living Installation performance entitled, "Cleaning the Clouds". The public is invited to come watch, participate, draw, and write at this performance.
A celebration of movement, Harmonious Opposites explores the act of occupying and embodying multiple spaces at once, without confusion. The creative process behind it reflects this idea. Pushing the boundaries of drawing, painting, and performance, it dissects and amplifies, samples, and distorts media and bodies with a touch of pretty.

Alan lives and works in New York City. His work has been featured in 5 New York solo shows and over 200 group shows. His work has been discussed in over 200 publications, books and media sources, including the New York Times (video & print), NBC’s Today Show, Marie Claire Italia, The New York Post, Fox Channel 5, the Village Voice, Time Out New York, the New York Press, and the cover of ShowPaper.

NY, New York: June 26-27, 2010: 4th Annual Rapathon

THE HIP HOP CULTURE CENTER IN HARLEM PRESENTS

THE 4th ANNUAL RAPATHON

New York, NY-- The Rap Phenomenon is back, are YOU ready to ROCK the MIC? Every May the Hip Hop Culture Center in Harlem (currently known as H2C2) hosts a non-stop cipher-showcase featuring 100+ emcees but this year it’s going down in June. The Annual Rapathon is one of the truest Hip Hop experiences you will ever come across. H2C2’s devotion to create a platform for artists has allowed emcees all over the Tri-State Area, Cuba, Lithuania, and Sweden to spread their message. Since 2006 the Rapathon has been our most significant event and has grown accordingly. Every year an hour is added making the duration of the 4th Annual Rapathon a massive 27 hours of continuous rap without any profanity.

The 4th Annual Rapathon will feature a one hour segment dedicated to Big Pun and his impact on Hip Hop. Emcees will note his achievements, memories, and impact on Hip Hop through freestyle. The perk of this year’s Rapathon is that it will be documented by the legendary Ralph McDaniels. He is the Hip Hop pioneer, entrepreneur, and visionary who created Video Music Box, the first music video show focused exclusively to an urban market-broadcast on public television. In addition, Ralph will be broadcasting the entire 27 hours of the 4th Annual Rapathon live via his internet show.

The countdown begins Saturday, June 26th, 2010 at 4:00 pm and ends Sunday, June 27th, 2010 at 7:00 pm. The Rapathon is open to rappers with the ability to rhyme for 90 seconds straight without cursing. H2C2 also wants to acknowledge the DJ’s who hold us down in this non-stop cipher-showcase feat. We need the wheels of steel to keep spinning so if you got skills and can hold us down for 3 hours straight this may be your chance to shine. DJs and emcees who want to perform or just want to be down with the Rapathon movement be on the lookout for auditions/rehearsals starting the last week of May. There is no registration fee for participants.

H2C2 is a facility that conducts Hip Hop centric education youth programs, sneaker battles, art exhibitions, fashion shows, and corporate special events. We are located at 2309 Frederick Douglass Blvd., 2nd Floor of the Magic Johnson Theater in the heart of Harlem, along 125th Street shopping district. We are accessible by A, B, C, D, 2 and 3 trains.

For more information pertaining to the 4th Annual Rapathon, please contact Natassia Seward at 212-234-7171 or hiphopculturectr@gmail.com. Also, check out our website www.h2c2harlem.com for updates.

PA, Philadelphia: June 12, 2010: B Boy BBQ

Switzerland, Basel: June 16-20, 2010: Vox Humana

L.A. ART MACHINE and Rivera & Rivera Gallery are proud to present
VOX HUMNANA
at Volta 6, Basel

Curated by Bryson Strauss, VOX HUMANA is a live art performance by legendary Los Angeles street artists Mear One, Kofie, Retna, and El Mac that will take place at VOLTA 6 in Basel, Switzerland, June 16-20, 2010.

Street artists work on the fly and in the open to create works of art that change the way we see, feel, and interact with our urban environments. The VOX HUMANA happening will provide an opportunity for VOLTA patrons to witness how street artists work and watch the live unfolding of “pieces” within the context of an international fine art fair.

For the five-day run of the fair, these four artists will create large-scale (up to 3.5 meters x 7 meters) pieces in their signature styles using acrylic and aerosol paints. VOLTA attendees are invited to witness the completion of these monumental works on Sunday, June 20, 2010 at 2 PM, and participate in a closing celebration.

This project is of unique art-historical value, as it represents a major shift in not only contemporary aesthetics, but in the public perception of street art generally. These artists, who grew up on the streets of one of the toughest cities in the world, carved a name for themselves as artists through dangerous illegal activity. Over 25 years, however, they have gone from being criminalized by their community to being celebrated for creating one of the most challenging and sophisticated contemporary art forms.

Don't Miss it!!

Billboard art competition in Poland: Deadline August 10, 2010

We would like to invite you to take part in a billboard art competition. The invitation is addressed to all interested artists and students worldwide. There is no entry fee.

The best 10 artworks selected by an international jury panel will be printed and exhibited in the urban space of the city of Torun, Poland in September/October 2010. The author of the winning entry will receive the Main Award in the amount of PLN 7000 (approx. EURO 1750, $2200).

The competition accompanies the 3rd Festival of Art on Billboards, Art Moves.

The artwork is supposed to be a creative response to this year's competition theme:
"Together or apart?"

This slogan can serve as a kind of a metaphor of the processes taking place in the contemporary world. Both individuals and the whole societies are faced with such a choice. Do they want to live together, contribute, collaborate and, as a result create shared value, or do they want to lead a separate, individual life of their own? Is it better to be single or in a stable relationship? Is being a member of a larger organization, like the European Union better than staying apart? Is it better to feel a part of your nation or rather an individual citizen? The possible interpretations are multiple. So, together or apart?

The entries can be sent by email until 10 August, 2010 to the following address: artmoves@tlen.pl
